Binding wire with high strength easily bent and tied in a knot

Binding wires are made of galvanized, plastic coated annealed and stainless steel wire. It is softness,
good ductility and high strength, and is easily bent and tied in a knot.
Binding wire with heat treatment will have high strength and become softer. Cover the wire with zinc,
its resistance to corrosion will be strength. Galvanized binding wire has a matte or shiny finish, and it
is easy to oppose the negative effects of the environment. PVC coated binding wire has resistance to
corrosion.
Manufacturing technology of baling wire consists of two stages. In the first stage are made of steel
billets, and burn it, and the second - passed under high pressure through a hole by drawing. It has a
circular cross section.
Binding wire without coating has a diameter of 0.16 mm - 2 mm, and coated diameter from 0.2 mm
to 2 mm. The most common use diameter is 0.8 mm, 1 mm and 1.2 mm.

Application:
1. Binding wire is used for binding reinforcement slabs, metal mesh processing, beams, walls,
columns and so on. In particular, it is used in concrete construction. Binding wire shall provide a
secure hold reinforcing bars of different diameters.
2. When you need to install fences and barriers, binding wire is used for making ropes, cables,
springs, nails and electrodes. Through a combination of flexibility and strength of binding wire
bonding is indispensable for the various elements of structures, and strengthen ceilings.
3. Used in various industries for packing finished products.
4. Binding wire used for hanging hops and vineyards, as it is a basic material for tapestries. Used
for hanging vines binding wire diameters from 2.2 mm to 2.5 mm, and for the hop with a
diameter of 1 mm.
5. Binding wire used for the production of welded wire mesh and for the manufacture of barbed
wire. Barbed wire is made of knitting nets with a diameter of 1.4 mm - 2.8 mm.
How to choice binding wire?
Before you buy a binding wire, to determine not only the meter, but also its type, the choice of which
depends on the purposes. Price per square meter of tie wire depends on its diameter.
BWI-01: Galvanized binding wire.
BWI-02: Black binding wire.
BWI-03: PVC coated binding wire.
BWI-04: Binding wire (loop tie wire).

What is the procedure to take out the quantities of

binding wire?
Remember a thumb rule Anonymous.

Quantity of binding wire used in the construction of structural members is 7Kg- 12 Kg

per Ton of Rebar used in the structural member.

This actually depends on the diameter of the bar used in the structural member. Binding
wire required to tie 1 Ton of 8 mm bars will be near to 12 Kg. Binding wire required to
tie 1 Ton of 28mm or 32 mm bars will be close to 7 kg.

More the diameter of the bar, lesser the requirement of binding wire.

These are just thumb rules. There is no calculation as such (as far as I know)

You can procure binding wire depending on the requirement.

There is no codal provision on how to measure the quantities of binding wire. It is

always followed by yardsticks or thumb rules of industry.
The quantity of binding wire depends on

1. Type of strcture
2. Type of bar
The main purpose of binding wire is to hold the bars in proper position.

Even the code IS 2502- 1963: Code of Practice for Bending and Fixing bars for concrete
reinforcement. ( Reaffirmed 2004) is silent. But the clause 7.2 talks only on tying of
reinforcement which is produced here below:

7.2 Tying of Reinforcement Bars - Bars crossing each other, where required, shall be
secured by binding wire (annealed) of size nqt less than 0.90 mm and conforming to IS:
280-1962 Specification for Mild Steel Wire (Revised), in such a manner that they will
not slip over each other at the time of fixing and concreting.

So the only way is to depend on past experience and thumb rules. Some of which are
discussed here.

As per Sri. P.T. Joglekar’s book on Quantity Surveyor Book it is mentioned as

For every quintal of steel reinforcement ( 1 quintal = 100 kg) 0.9 to 1.3kg of binding wire
is required.

For 100kg of steel reinforcement = 0.9 to 1.3kg of binding wire

For 1 tonne (1000kg) = 9 to 13 kg binding wire will be required .

Further as per the industry practice the Quantity of binding wire used varies from 7 kg-
13 kg per ton of steel.

Nowadays Galvanized Iron, GI wires are also used in the industry.

Quality / Specification

The binding wire should be 16 or 18 gauge annealed wire conforming to IS 280. It shall be free from
rust, oil, paint, grease, loose mill scale or any type.

It shall be free from corrosion and abrasion and should be abrasion

Highly stringent.
Its tensile strength is half hard i.e. the Tensile Strength: 250-430 N/mm2.
and Elongation: 40 % @ measuring length of 5.0 x dia.

Precaution while binding

The binding wire should be cut in to pieces from coil for binding.
Care should be taken that the length of wire should not be less than 4’’. Take 2 numbers wire and
bind diagonally at joint tightly. Do not leave any joint, bind all the joints. At some places, there is a
practice to bind alternately joints which is wrong practice and reinforcement may loose during laying
RCC slab.
