Sikaflex®-Construction (D)
1-Component, General Purpose Polyurethane Sealant

Description Sikaflex-Construction (D) is a ready for use, moisture cured, non-sag, elastic joint
sealant based on polyurethane, suitable for hot climates.

Use General purpose, interior and exterior, joint sealant for expansion and
construction joints in building construction such as:
- Balcony parapet walls
- Pre-cast concrete construction
- Around windows and doors
- Facade and metal claddings
- Skirtings
- Wall to floor joints

Advantages - Easy to extrude

- Movement capability 25%
- Excellent adhesion to most substrates
- Bubble free curing
- Very short cut off string
- Early tack free surface
- High tear strength
- Can be overpaintable

Joint Design
Preparation and plan- Joints must be properly dimensioned as changes are normally no longer feasible
ning after construction. Basis for calculation of the necessary joint width are the technical
characteristic values of the joint sealer and the adjacent building materials, the
exposure of the building elements, their construction and size.

Calculation of material The following table gives an indication of running metres of joint one may seal with
consumption one 600 ml sausage:

Joint Joint Width b (mm)

depth Running metres of joint per 600 ml unit

d (mm) 8 10 12 15 20 25 30 35

8 9.3 7.5 6.2 5.0

10 7.4 6.0 5.0 4.0 3.0

12 4.0 3.3 2.5 2.0 1.8 1.3

Application
Condition of substrate Sound, clean and dry, free from dust and loose particles or surface treatments.
Paint, laitance and other poorly adhering particles must be removed mechanically.
Clean joints with compressed air.

Primer Sika-Primer 3
For porous substrates, e.g. concrete and mortar
Flash off time: minimum 30 minutes, maximum 5 hours

Sika Adhesive Cleaner HR 1

For powder coatings
Flash off time: 15 minutes

Sika Primer 21
For PVC and for mortar in window connection joints
Flash off time: minimum 30 minutes, maximum 5 hours

Sika Primer 35
For metals e.g. Aluminium, Noble Steel, galvanised steel
Flash off time: min. 30 minutes, max. 5 hours.

Backfilling Use Sika Backing Rod, closed cell, high resilience polyethylene foam of diameter
20%-30% greater than the joint width.

Application - Protect joint flanks with masking tape.

- Insert suitable size Sika Backing Rod.
- Apply appropriate primer, if necessary, and observe waiting time.
- Gun the Sikaflex-Construction (D) into the joint, avoiding entrapment of air. Finish
off to a concave profile.
- Sikaflex-Construction (D) may be smoothed off with clean water to which a few
drops of detergent are added.
- Remove masking tape immediately on completion.

Remarks - Sealant compatible coatings may cover the joint sides to maximum 1 mm.
- If the sealant is to be overcoated, the compatibility of the coating must be tested
individually according to DIN 52 452-2
- Do not use in floor joints or in permanently submersed joints.
- When smoothing, ensure that no soapy liquid penetrates between the sealant and
joint flank.

Safety
Precautionary Keep containers tightly closed and in a dry environment. Observe regulations on
measures label.

The primers contain volatile solvents. Solvent fumes are flammable. Provide
sufficient ventilation and keep away from open fire during application and drying.

After spillage:
Remove mechanically. Remove remnants with alcohol containing solvent, using
absorbent material (e.g. sand, kieselgur). Handle according to local refuse law.

Extinguishing media:
CO2 -dry quenching material, foam.

First aid:
Eye contact: Rinse with plenty of water immediately (approx. 10 - 15 min.).
Consult a doctor.

The use of rubber gloves, eye glasses, dust mask and other suitable safety clothing
and equipment is recommended.

Skin contact: Rinse contaminated skin with plenty of water and soap.

In a not fully cured state the product contaminates water and should not get into
drains, water and ground.

Clean tools and equipment immediately after use with Colma Cleaner. Cured ma-
terial can only be removed mechanically.
