BSECE3A Electrical Circuits I

RESEARCH PLAN

 Problem being Addressed

These days, the demand on supply electricity continuously increases due to the

problems encountered from the major energy sources. In addition to this, the advancement in

technology especially on gadgets also causes the increase in energy consumption. This study

gives improvement to the use of mobile power banks. In addition to this, the device will also

use a simpler circuit compared to other solar powered power banks that can be bought

commercially. Hence, the researcher formulates questions that aid the construction of the

device involved in the study.

1. How fast can the Solar Powered Mobile Charger work compared to the ordinary power

bank and solar powered charger that can be bought from the market?

2. What is the ratio of performance between the Solar Powered Mobile Charger and those that

can be bought from the market?

3. What is the efficiency of the device in the market and industry?

 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are as follow:

1. To test the efficiency of the device in charging a mobiles device.

2. To compare and assess the performance of the device with the ordinary power bank and

commercialized solar powered charger.

3. To test the efficiency of the device in the market or on the consumers.

 Hypotheses

Ho (null): The Solar Powered Mobile Charger cannot work well enough in charging mobile

devices.

Ha (alternative): The Solar Powered Mobile Charger is efficient in charging mobile devices.

 Description in detail of method or procedures

a. Acquisition of Materials

The materials to be used in the study and their respective estimated prices in the market

are as follow.

MATERIAL PRICE (Php) QUANTITY

Solar Panel (6V-12V) 500 1

5V Step-Up/ Inverter
150 1
USB Charger Circuit

1IN914 diode 2 1

Double A (AA) Battery 20 2

Double A battery holder ------- 1

Solid connecting wires 10 2 (red and black)

Electrical tape 30 1

Double sided foam tape 60 1

Small container/box ------ 1

Soldering lead 10 -----

The tools to be used for the construction of the device are drill, wire stripper, pliers,

and soldering iron.

b. Device Making

The construction of the device shall take place after an in-depth research. In this

procedure some of the materials may be improvised for lesser cost. The following are the

steps in constructing the device.

Solder the anode part of the diode to the positive side of the solar panel and a black

wire to the negative connection. Solder red wire to the cathode side of the diode. Drill a hole

on the top of the small container or box in such a way that the solar panel will be positioned

properly over it with the soldered wires passing through the hole. For the battery holder,

solder one connective wire for each of its positive and negative part. Connect both of the

positive wires from the solar panel and battery holder to the positive side of the USB charge

circuit. The same thing must be done to the negative wirings. Assemble and organize the

parts inside the container and leave the solar panel tightly attached on the case’s cover. It is

necessary to put a pair of AA batteries to serve as the power supply.

c. Research Design

The study will undergo as a controlled quantitative research study in which the data

will be collected before and after the intervention of the device to the field designated. In this

study, the same device shall be used before and after the intervention for more accurate

results.

The study will have two groups: the experimental group and the controlled group. The

experimental group will be containing the Solar Powered Mobile Charger, which is our test

variable, while in the controlled group; a common power bank at 2000mAh will be used plus

the commercialized solar powered charger at the same amperage. The factors that will affect

the results are the speed within a fixed time and the time that the devices can fully charge a

mobile phone. Due to these predicted factors, the device will be tested twice at the same

location for fair outcome.

 Data Analysis

Since the study has two groups to be compared, the researcher will use T-Test as the

statistical tool for the data. This is to compare the actual difference between the two means in

relation to the variation in the data.

The t-test assesses whether the means of two groups are statistically different from

each other. This analysis is appropriate when comparing the means of two groups, and

especially appropriate as the analysis for the post-test-only two-group randomized

experimental design.

In this test, the researcher will know if there is a significant difference between the

means experimental and controlled groups. This significant difference is the difference

between the means of the groups in order to prove the alternative hypothesis. This will

determine the efficiency of the device whether it is applicable for efficient use or not.

 Risk Assessment

The risk that this study will face during experimantation is the weather itself. If the device

won't be able to acquire enough amount of solar energy, there will be a large discrepancy

between its efficiency compared to the commercialized solar power bank.
