Follow the rules and obey the law: Obligations and Suggestions
I) Basic information on student group.
This is an EFL setting, based on an average English class in a language center in Chile.
This is a lesson plan for a class of 16 students. The ages in this class range between 19 to 45
years old. The level of the class is that of an intermediate mid according to the ACTFL
proficiency guidelines. Most of the participants in these group come from private schooling
which means their exposure to formal instruction to the target language has been very
significant. Additionally, a not small part of what they currently know has been learned
through the entertainment industry and social media. In this group the younger students will
have an advantage in comparison with the older ones because of the situation previously
described. The students in this class have different reasons to learn English. The most
predominant reasons are: work, tourism, personal interest. The objective of these course is to
prepare students to successfully interact in social, educational and work-related scenarios.

II) Limitation of the class situation

The most salient limitation of this course is the frequency and time in which the class is held.
This group meets twice a week for 75 minutes at 7:30 pm in the evening. Given the little
weekly frequency for these lessons and the time for the lesson, it is very hard for the students
to give priority to the course. Also by having class this late in the evening students are tired
and hungry (which makes a huge difference in their performance). These constrains will have
a direct impact on the outcome of the course. This lesson is planned for a 75-minute block.
Students should know at this level, the present tense, understand conjugation of verbs in the
target language. Even though their vocabulary is limited to basic personal information, they
should be able to manage basic interaction and information exchange. They should be able
to understand language produced in simple sentences. Participating in this class will allow
the students to create language consisting of sentences and strings of sentences as well as to
comfortably exchange information about predictable content in the target language. All these
skills are based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

III) Topic/ content of the lesson.

The topic for this lesson is called “Follow the Rules and Obey the Law”. Students will be
introduced to the topic of being a good American citizen. They will be presented with some
duties that are expected of American citizens. They will compare them and contrast them
with their own. These using specific grammar content that will be presented with a greater
emphasis on speaking and listening will be more emphasis that reading and writing. In this
class, students will first practice with the teacher and then with a partner and finally as a
class. Students will take turns to participate and produce language. The target communicative
skills for this lesson are some of those found on the Intermediate Mid ACTFL speaking and
listening guidelines. Students will be able to comprehend sentence length speech about a
familiar topic, combine known communicative elements and new conversational input a bout
a familiar topic (ACTFL guidelines, Listening and Speaking)

IV) Performance Objective(s) for the lesson

Americans are known to do things by the book and that can cause a culture shock specially
for South Americans who think that being crafty is a positive quality if it helps to get what
they want sooner. In this class students will:
1. Illustrate simple cultural differences: the class will list a number of cultural behaviors for
both the target culture and the home culture. The teacher will present some previously
selected expected social behaviors of American citizens in their everyday lives. Students will
provide examples of how that is different in their own culture.
2. Explain/ discuss what can be done to avoid cultural misunderstanding. Students will
discuss what type of misunderstanding can these behaviors cause
3. Students will be given time of the class to write a short script about how to become a good
citizen when visiting the USA. They will have to act out their recommendations and record
them with a phone to present at the end of the class. The video will be evaluated using a
rubric.
The teacher will be a facilitator and guide throughout the class. As a facilitator he will
provide the information regarding the target culture and will present the discussion questions.
As a guide, he will model, time and assist the class during the group discussion and
individual language production. The students will be reminded of the use of the imperative at
early stages of the lesson and they will be introduced to the use of the modal auxiliaries Must
and Should and the structure Have to.

V) Materials used
- Warm up: comic strip, first slide in the power point.
- Intro activity: Power point “Follow the rules and obey the law”, projector, computer
laptop, white board and markers.
- Activity 3: cellphones/internet (to record and send clip to the teacher)

VI) Procedure for the lesson

A. Introduction (motivation, attention getter). 3 minutes.
The teacher will show the class a comic strip which is in the first slide of the power point.
Will ask the students. Why is this funny? Do you agree with the fox? Is this against the
law in this country?

D. Reinforcement/ follow up
If the students are still having problems using the modal auxiliaries Must and Should as well as
Have to I would select beforehand some websites where they can practice the concepts. Then, I
would schedule the computer lab (every language center has one in Chile, that is part of the basic
requirements to function) and will show them where to practice. Giving homework can be
another option.
For the websites look in the appendices
The teacher will monitor how students are doing and will be able to see what are their mistakes.
Students will ask questions and the teacher can explain individually the concepts and grammar
points.

VII) What will come after this lesson?

In this lesson only the affirmative and negative forms were presented. A next lesson would
include using questions for the same purpose. Also, a presentation of more vocabulary related to
the subject. In this class the concept will be strengthen, and different other activities would be
presented such as having them write a good citizenship manual, present about other countries
and their own citizenship norms etc.
