Do You Have A Plan?
If you have seen productivity losses in the
past year due to a shortage of skilled workers,
you're not alone. A 2013 study by Tooling
U SME indicated that 64 percent of more
than 850 U.S. manufacturing companies
experienced this phenomenon.
In spite of this, 54 percent of respondents in
the study said their company didn't have a
plan for fixing the skills gap, and 40 percent
noted that their company had no consistent
training budget.
These may not seem like big numbers now, but
data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
and the Boston Consulting Group predicts
that roughly 264,000 machinists will have
to join the workforce in the next five years
to meet increased production demands and
compensate for retiring workers. Projections
for related jobs like welders, mechanics and
engineers are similarly grim.
The effects of this shortage cannot be
underestimated. As skilled maintenance

personnel become scarcer, existing staff are
subjected to more responsibilities and longer
hours, compromising the quality of their work.
Machines break down more often, and the
plant struggles to meet production demands
because precious time has been lost to
unplanned downtime.
These setbacks also result in major financial
losses. The 2014 Manufacturing Skills
and Training Study projected one sample
manufacturer to experience an 11-percent
loss of annual earnings just from not having
the right people in the right positions. This
translated to $4.6 million in only one year.
Employers have several options, but perhaps
the most immediate and impactful solution is
to invest in training their existing workforce.
