Course Description:

This course is designed to prepare students to become informed civic participants within society.
The students will learn about the roots, history, and the potential future of the United States of
America. The students will engage in critical reading of documents and articles to determine
their validity and produce written products based on their assessment of the presented material.

Course Competencies/ Learning Objectives

Students who successfully complete United States History will be competent in the following:

• Be able to identify the roots of the United States of America


• Be able to identify the founding fathers of the U.S.
• Be able to identify key historic milestones in U.S. history
• Be able to identify key figures in U.S. history
• Be able to critically analyze text for bias
• Be able to articulate and express what they learn
Student Evaluation:

The grading system for the Social Studies Department at ASU High School is as follows:

Tests, Projects, & Major Papers - 35%


Quizzes, Classwork, & Minor Assignments - 25%
Warm up, Notes, & Journal Assignments - 20%
Class Participation - 10%
Homework - 10%
Extra Credit - 5%

Attendance Policy:

Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience. ASU
High School expects students to regularly attend all of their courses. Students are responsible for
ensuring their course work does not suffer due to excess absences. Students are expected to
attend arrive on-time for every class. Exceptions may be made in the event of illness and valid
emergencies.

Classroom Expectations:

5. Be responsible for your actions, only you control your actions
6. No eating, drinking, cell phones, or iPods permitted in the classroom without prior
teacher permission

Class Requirements:

Homework will be given on a periodic basis. It will be collected at the beginning of class on the
day it is due. It is the student’s responsibility to complete assigned homework. Each day
homework is late will incur a 10% penalty, up to 50%. You will be given the opportunity to turn
in all late work at the end of each unit, which are approximately two weeks in length. Late work
will not be accepted after the unit assessment has been completed. Per Social Studies
Department policy, work that is not turned in will receive a zero at the end of the grading period.

If you are absent, you are responsible to make up the assignments and/or tests when you return.
Every Friday, I will send an email out to the whole class informing them of the homework
assignments and/or upcoming tests or quizzes for the following week. If absent, you be given a

grace period equal to the number of days you were absent to turn in assignment, after this period
of time the late assignment timer starts.

Make time to come in after school to catch up on missed work from your absences. I will not
cover missed material during the regular class time, but will help you with questions you have
before or after school.

Methodology:

A combination of lectures, classroom discussions, various presentations, several videos,


cooperative learning opportunities, and problem-based reading and learning will be used
throughout this course. Grades will be determined by the satisfactory and timely completion of
assignments as previously noted. The grade of each assignment is based on the individual
assignment.
