Workshop
This example will be used to illustrate the use of TASC to Rate/Check a
falling film evaporator. Hence, the geometry of the exchanger and the
process conditions are known and you want to know from TASC if the
exchanger can achieve the required duty.

Learning Objectives
Once you have completed this section you will be able to:

• Setup a falling film evaporator case

• Enter specific enthalpy in property table

Process Overview
This example uses condensing steam on the shellside to evaporate a
falling film of 5% Brine on the tubeside. The data has been provided in
both SI and British/American Customary units.

Details of the exchanger are given in the table on the next page. It is a
single exchanger made of carbon steel and TEMA Class C.

Building the Simulation

The New option will clear any data and call up the Startup screen.
Complete the Startup screen as a Checking case and set the units and
the physical properties.

1. Enter the Geometric data.

2. When in the Exchanger Geometry tab, select the Exchanger
Detail tab and choose Falling Film for the special exchanger
option.
Exchanger button

As the falling film evaporator

has the hot stream
condensing, ensure that the
first tube pass is set to "no",
i.e., co-current flow
downwards.

3. Enter the Process data.

Process button
All the data that is required has been entered. Save the dataset and
then run TASC by clicking the Run icon or Run from the menu bar, and
Calculate All.
