COURSE OUTLINE

Fall 2010

1. Ca le n d a r In fo rm a tio n

ENCH 427 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

Review of first and second law principles; application to the properties of fluids and
solutions; vapour liquid equilibria; the third law; applications to chemical equilibrium and
chemical reactions.
Course Hours: H(4-2T-1)
Calendar Reference:

2. Le a rn in g Ou tc o m e s
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
• Calculate properties of solids, liquids and gases (density, heat capacity, ...) from
an equation of state.
• Calculate the heat produced or consumed by various processes (evaporation,
melting, dissolution, expansion, chemical reaction,...)
• Calculate the equilibrium of chemical reactions from thermodynamic data
• Calculate phase equilibria and predict phase diagrams from thermodynamic data
• Understand the interrelationships between properties of substances.
