At the end of this course, you will be able to:
• Calculate properties of solids, liquids and gases (density, heat capacity, ...) from
an equation of state.
• Calculate the heat produced or consumed by various processes (evaporation,
melting, dissolution, expansion, chemical reaction,...)
• Calculate the equilibrium of chemical reactions from thermodynamic data
• Calculate phase equilibria and predict phase diagrams from thermodynamic data
• Understand the interrelationships between properties of substances.

The following examinations will be held in this course:
• Three quizzes: Open book, closed notes
• Midterm exam: November 5; 90 minutes; open book, closed notes
• Final exam: Scheduled by the Registrar’s Office; 3 hours; open book, closed
notes

The use of a basic scientific calculator is permitted in examinations; however, laptops or
calculators with formula storage or graphing capabilities are not.
