Class
Descriptions:
Science
will
be
a
hands-‐on
learning
experience
for
the
students
this
year
as
we
participate
in
projects
and
labs
utilizing
Holy
Family’s
very
own
science
lab.
We
will
look
closer
at
the
preliminary
stages
of
each
branch
of
science
as
each
class
will
cover
a
specific
branch.
By
the
end
of
middle
school,
our
graduates
should
have
a
deeper
understanding
of
each
discipline
of
science
as
a
foundation
for
high
school
sciences.
The
sixth
and
seventh
combo
class
will
discover
Life
Science
(Biology)
and
eighth
grade
will
participate
in
learning
Chemistry
and
Physics.
Each
science
domain
will
incorporate
a
unit
of
earth
science,
life
science,
and
physics
within
their
domain
integrating
lessons
and
subjects
related
to
the
teaching
standards
as
well
as
participating
in
Engineering
Projects
following
the
Design
Thinking
Process.
The
content
will
come
from
the
state
science
standards
as
well
as
Next
Generation
Science
Standards
(NGSS).
Goals:
• Investigate
problems
and
find
or
create
a
solution
supported
by
data
and
evidence.
• Interpret
and
communicate
scientific
information.
• Learn
how
to
solve
problems
in
a
team
atmosphere
by
communicating
and
collaborating.
• Learn
how
to
manipulate
technology
to
express
scientific
results.
• Connect
science
to
other
core
subjects
and
the
real
world
and
see
how
different
disciplines
of
science
are
related
to
the
issues
in
everyday
life.
Homework:
Much
work
will
be
conducted
in
class.
Homework
will
be
given
on
occasion
and
posted
on
the
class
website
https://hfsmiddleschool.shutterfly.com
under
the
science
tab
related
to
the
students’
class/grade
level.
If
homework
is
given
it
will
be
for
the
following
reasons;
students
did
not
complete
their
work
in
class,
supplemental
reading
pertaining
to
the
lesson,
review
prior
to
next
day’s
class
work,
and/or
project
work.
Incomplete
Work:
Students
are
responsible
for
completing
and
submitting
their
work.
If
students
fail
to
submit
their
work
they
will
receive
an
incomplete.
For
every
3
incompletes,
the
students
obtain
they
will
receive
study
hall.
Study
hall
will
be
held
every
Friday
at
lunch
during
the
school
day
to
avoid
afterschool
obligations.
Late
Work:
If
students
work
is
completed
but
is
not
submitted
on
time
it
will
be
considered
late.
Any
late
work
will
be
collected
and
given
half
credit
and
will
no
longer
be
collected
once
the
grading
period
has
concluded.
Accommodations
can
be
made
as
a
need
basis
upon
a
teacher
parent
meeting.
Extra
Support:
If
your
child
is
struggling
in
science,
please
contact
me
and
we
can
arrange
some
allotted
times
after
school
where
I
can
tutor
and
help
your
student
with
their
deficiencies.
Grading:
Grades
are
provided
based
off
of
a
percentage
scale
per
unit.
For
each
unit
students
will
participate
in…
• Classwork
/
Homework
15%
• Assessments
20%
• Projects
20%
• Labs
20%
• Journal
/
Notebook
20%
• Presentation
5%
Projects,
Labs,
and
Journals
will
be
used
as
summative
assessments
to
gage
students
understanding
of
the
lessons
and/or
unit
so
therefore
holds
the
most
weight
in
this
hands-‐on
learning
environment.
Students
will
conduct
self
evaluations
and
peer
evaluations
prior
to
teacher
evaluations
to
bridge
their
learning
and
understanding
before
final
grades
are
given.
Journals
will
also
be
used
for
student
led
parent
teacher
conferences
in
the
second
half
of
the
school
year.
Students
will
also
participate
in
a
Science
Competition
that
is
categorized
as
a
project
and
is
worth
20%
of
their
overall
grade.
Majority
of
the
work
will
done
in
the
classroom
and
lab
environment;
however,
some
work
will
need
to
be
conducted
at
home.
