Management Portfolio

Danielle George
Introduction
For my Classroom Management Portfolio, I am covering things that can
help me in a K-2nd classroom. I plan to teach the younger grades, so I am not
planning for one specific content area, but rather all of them at once. This
project will ultimately help me in managing my future classroom as well as being
a reference throughout my years of teaching. I plan to come up with many
different strategies, so that in case one thing doesn’t work, I have multiple
things to help me with my classroom management. I am excited to be able to
have something to take with me in my future endeavors, such as job interviews,
because ultimately this will be a huge help and resource and show that I am
knowledgeable in managing a classroom.

Philosophical Statement

In my classroom, I want my students to feel safe, respected, welcome,


and free to express themselves. I believe in some student choice, when it is
controlled, and I believe in having a fun learning environment. With this being
stated, I want school to feel like it is a fun place to be instead of a dreaded
place to go to everyday. As a teacher, I want to create a community within my
classroom that every student feels a part of. I plan to use positive
reinforcement to a certain extent, but I also want to instill internal motivation
within my students to where they want to do things for themselves and not
always for a reward. I want my classroom to be fun, inviting, and controlled at
all times, and I strive to communicate that through my actions and Classroom
Management Portfolio.
First Day(s)
This is an “All About Me” Pennant.
I would use this as a bell ringer on the first day of school to give the
children something to do as they find their seat and wait for instructions
that morning. It would help me to learn about my students. I would
hang these up in my classroom/ outside my classroom, so every child
could learn about their classmates, as well as their parents when they
come for Meet the Teacher.

In the first week of class, I would like to get in contact with the parents
and find out more about the students in my class. This would help me to
better understand where each child is coming from and any essential
information I should know about their learning. This would also help
start effective communication with parents for the school year.

This I-Spy game I would use before a class discussion about where

engaged and help them to learn about their new environment for

The “Shout Out


Wall” is an
alternative way of
giving “Shout-
Outs” to your
classmates. This
can be used
whenever and as
often as the
students would
like. This creates a
positive classroom
community seeing
the positives

Hall Check Out Cones must be placed on the students’ desk, when they leave
the classroom. This helps control only one student out of the classroom at a
time.

This is an example of a classroom constitution I would like to create with my class. I
would have a few basic rules in mind in my head and as a class I would steer them
towards coming up with these rules. It would allow my students to have ownership
in the rules, and hold them accountable by signing the constitution. I would only
have 5 or 6 rules, so that it does not seem overpowering or too much to remember
for the kids.

I love the idea of every student in the class having a job each week. This allows for
everyone to feel important by having a special job, and allows for student ownership
when a job is not done or done correctly. I would change jobs once a week so that
every student has a chance to get to do every job.

The action cup would provide a

“Beat the Teacher”


How to play "beat the teacher:" I
have an area on my dry erase
board where I write "Mrs. George
vs. Class," every time a student
calls out an answer or something
of that nature I get a tally
mark. Every time the students
raise their hands, THEY get a
tally! Whoever has the most tally
at the end of the day wins!!

to not call out answers, but
instead raise their hand.)

I would like to use class dojo as a way for my students to visually earn points
for doing well/listening/following the rules. This would be a great way to
communicate with parents on student progress/behavior problems.

These “Please stop what you’re
doing and make a better choice
cards” are a fantastic way to stop
disruptive behavior without having
to stop your teaching in the
process. I could just hand these to
a student while I am teaching, and
this lets them know I am aware or
their behavior, it needs to stop,
and they are accountable for their
“better choice” they make.

This “Mood Duster” is a silly way of


getting rid of bad attitudes or
cranky children in the classroom.
The teacher would “dust” off any
bad attitudes that she noticed in
the classroom. This could prevent
any disruptions and misbehaviors
in the classroom if causes of
misbehaviors are caught early.

I am an advocate of the clip
chart behavior system. It
gives students a chance to
visually see their choices and
what they can earn. I believe
in children being able to earn
clip-ups for better choice
behavior than before. I also
am a huge fan of this
motivational chart that does
not say “Parent Contact” or
anything of that sort. I am a
huge advocate in students
being able to be in charge of
their own learning and
behavior and this chart
creates ownership over that.

Motivation
In my cooperative teacher’s classroom, she uses Mr. Potato head to
motivate the students towards a class reward. Every time the whole
class gets a compliment, such as walking quietly in the hall, or ding
excellent in a special, they add a piece to Mr. Potato head. When he
is complete, the class earned a reward.

Brain Breaks
Brain breaks provide a
new classroom job, as
well as a refresher to
get them motivated to
move onto what is next
for the day. Brain
breaks will keep the
kids motivated when I
notice that some of
them are getting bored,
or fidgety.

Engagement
Flocabulary is a fun way to engage students in a vocabulary lesson through a
hip hop video that kids can get up and dance too and eventually sing along
with by the end of the week. Within the song it states the words and their
definitions.

Activities: Skip count using the Macarena. Counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s,
etc. will help children with multiplication.
Do expanded notation with the body movements. Clap the ones, stomp
the tens, and snap the hundreds.
Can children count backwards from 100??

Macarena Math engages students into math with a fun song with
movements. This helps engrain the information in the student, as
well as making math fun for the class.
