General Procedures:

A. Beginning of period- Students should be in the door, headed towards their assigned

seats by the time that the last bell has rung. They will be unpacking their calendars,

bell work and materials for the day, at the same time putting phones and any other

distracting materials away.

1. Attendance- Attendance is taken based on the assigned seating chart that is

changed every 4 weeks.

2. Previously absent students-Previously absent students can copy the

calendar from the back of the wall and collect any handouts from the extras

basket below the calendar. If they have any questions they can ask an elbow

partner or ask me during independent work time. I am always available by

email during their absence.

3. Tardy Students-Students who arrive late to class should enter as quickly and

quietly as possible. They should gather their materials and begin with the

class immediately.

4. Expected student behavior-Our classroom will be a community of respect,

everyone will give and receive respect equally. There will be time for using

electronics, when appropriate, and socializing with friends. However, if you

abuse these privileges, they will be taken away completely.

B. Out-of-room policies- When students have the privilege of representing our school

in the community (volunteering, games, field trips, etc.) they will go above and

beyond to show the up most respect to those around them.

2

C. Materials and equipment- Students will be expected to have their binder for class

that includes tab dividers, loose leaf paper, 1 pen, 1 pencil, highlighter or marker

(used for grading), and any reading/study materials the class is working on. The

classroom is equipped with laptops (one per student) so bringing a personal laptop

to class is unnecessary. Cell phone use is granted on a case by case basis during

independent work time only.

1. What to bring to class- Students will bring their binders (with all of the

included materials) to class every period.

2. Pencil sharpener- Students are expected to have their pencils sharpened

before class, mechanical pencils are preferred. However, if pencils need to be

sharpened during class, student must wait until independent work time to do

so. No pencil sharpening during instructional time.

3. Other room equipment- Students will ask permission before using any and all

equipment in the classroom.

4. Student contact with teacher’s desk, storage and other materials- Student’s

will always ask permission before coming into contact with teacher’s desk,

storage closet or other classroom spaces.

D. Ending the period-Students are expected to make use of all of the work time in class.

The bell does not dismiss you, I dismiss you. I will give you 1 minute to pack your

things before the bell, where I will make any last-minute announcements. Students

are not to leave seats during this time or pack up before I make this announcement.

Seat Work and Instruction Procedures

A. Student attention- Since our classroom is based on mutual respect, there will be no

talking when others are talking. This means when the teacher is talking during

instruction time, or other students are presenting to the class, whether to whole

class or small groups.

B. Student participation- All students will participate equally in class. Whether in class

discussions, lit circles, group work, etc. If you have an issue that prevents you from

participating in class in any way, please talk to me so we can make alternative ways

of participation.

C. Seat-work procedures- During independent work time or group work at their seats,

students will be respectful of the teacher and their fellow students. Students are also

expected to work on task at all times.

1. Talk among students- Students should remain on task when working

together in groups, the conversation should stay relevant to the topic and

assignment at all times. Once the group has finished the assignment and let

the teacher know, then they may have an appropriate conversation at their

tables.

2. Obtaining help-I am available to help students when we have independent

work time or during group work time. If a student is in need of help, they can

raise their hand, and I will come help them. It is not okay to interrupt

instructional time to ask for help on your personal work.

4

3. Out of seat-Students are permitted to be out of their seat to gather materials

they may need from the extras basket or materials (paper, pencil, books,

etc.). Students are not allowed to walk around the room to socialize or

wander aimlessly around the room with no purpose.

4. When seat work has been completed- When seat work (independent or

group) has been completed for the day, students may check in with teacher. If

all other assignments for the day have been completed, students may quietly

socialize while they work on other assignments for the week.

Student Group Work

A. Use of materials and supplies- Students should be prepared for class, per usual.

Students may ask others if they need to use their supplies in group work.

B. Assignments of students to groups- The majority of the time, students will be

assigned to groups (either in their current seat assignment or an app that

randomizes groups). Occasionally, I will allow students to choose their own groups,

depending on how the class has been behaving in the weeks prior. It is in your best

interest to always be respectful and well behaved.

C. Student participation and behavior- Group work will be a big part of our class this

year, and all students will be expected to participate in groups. All students may not

be comfortable participating in the same way. We will have lots of different “jobs” in

the groups, allowing everyone the opportunity to participate. The communication

should be respectful at all times in the groups, no personal attacks of any kind.

Miscellaneous

A. Signals- I believe that the respectful community that we will build in our classroom

will create an environment where there isn’t a need to have signals to bring the class

back to attention. However, if there is a need, students should know that if my two

fingers are in the air (like a peace sign) and my other hand is making the quiet finger

over my mouth that it is time to quiet the class. When the students have quieted the

interruption, we will continue on with class.

B. Behavior during interruptions- When the office makes a call to my classroom or

another teacher interrupts class for a moment, students should quietly occupy

themselves with assignment until we are finished talking.

C. Fire and disaster drills- These drills are to be taken very seriously, as such students

will be on their very best behavior. Students will stay with our class and not go off

with their friends or other classes. It is important to be attentive to what is

happening to keep everyone safe during these drills.

D. Lunch period- My classroom will be open during lunch for students to work in my

room. I can be available to students for help if prior arrangements are made. Please

email me anytime.

Discipline Strategies/Rules and Consequences

Rule Consequence
I won’t bother you, if you aren’t bothering me. If you are a repeat offender of bothering
me,
meaning that you continue to break our
class rules and talk while I am teaching, you
6

will have parent contact home and serve a

lunch detention with me.
What happens in the class, stays in the class. We will be having some in depth, heavy
conversations in our classroom. In order to
make this a safe space where everyone can
share without being judged, everything we
say here, stays here. If you choose to share
other’s thoughts and feelings outside of the
class you will have parent contact home and
write the student you offended an apology.
Be willing to grow! I expect that you will choose new genres of
books for your projects (not Diary of a
Kid every time), maintain a positive attitude
when working with new group members, and
be willing to take on new jobs in the class. If
you can’t do these things, I will make parent
contact and we will decide together the best
appropriate way to help you excel in this
class.

*All school and district rules will be abided by at all times in my classroom.
