A Flow Metering Solution for harsh service, highly viscous, slurry type, or
contaminated primary line fluid applications (but ideal for conventional
liquid, gas and steam applications as well!)
Introduction
In the public domain for over fifty years, the Wedge meter has served in numerous applications, however due to the unique
nature of the Wedge meter design, it has been found to be particularly useful in applications characteristically involving
harsh, contaminated, high viscosity, air or particulate entrained line fluids such as sewage, steam, tar sands, molasses,
cement, and petroleum products.

Primary Flow Signal, Inc. offers the PFS WedgetypeTM flow meter in a selection of configurations, line sizes, pressure
ratings and material selection to bracket a broad cross section of installation and application requirements. In all
instances, Primary Flow Signal, Inc.
brings decades of design, engineering,
manufacturing and innovation expertise,
experience and leadership to this
important and useful line of flow
measurement devices.

A broad range of sizes and configurations

of the PFS WedgetypeTM flow metering
element is likely to accommodate nearly
any installation requirement. Rely on the
expert assistance available from the
applications specialists at Primary Flow
Signal, Inc. to tailor make special
configurations in cases where standard
design protocols may be insufficient.

This product is characterized by stable

coefficient performance, good to excellent
accuracy, moderate headloss(less than
orifice), good repeatability, high viscosity
tolerance, unaffected by sedimentary
secondary phase, low cost, long service
life, and no maintenance requirements.

General Information
The operating principal of the PFS WedgetypeTM flow meter is The opening height of the wedge can be changed in design

PFS-WM-FTB - RFWN flange tapped short form wedge element

The PFS-WM-FTB raised face weld neck flange tapped short form wedgetype flow primary is
ideally suited for clear liquids, gas, or steam line fluid applications, and is distinguished by its
laying length, which is shorter than comparable line size wedgetype meters of conventional
design.

Materials of construction may be selected from any commercially available flange material with
surface finishes to coordinate with service requirements. The tap arrangement is designed to
penetrate the flange and reach the inside diameter of the flow element. Internal NPT threading is
typical, but again, subject to the constraints imposed by bolt pattern, virtually any tap threading, or
welded couplings can be incorporated as required.

PFS-WM-CTA or CTB- chemical tee pressure tap connetcion

The PFS-WM-CTA and PFS-WM-CTB are PFS WedgetypeTM flow element
styles that are each fitted with “chemical tee” pressure sensor instrument
connections. The distinction is inherent with the type of process flanges
provided.

This style, when utilized with remote seal sensors for the secondary
instrumentation, is particularly effective in measurement of line fluids
characterized by high or changing viscosity, slurry type, and/or containing
solids in suspension, that are typically difficult to handle based on plugging
experienced with conventional type tap arrangements. This meter style in
association with appropriate sealed sensors is ideal for hazardous materials,
where collection of the hazardous line fluid in the impulse lines would be
unacceptable.

All data is subject to change, and should be confirmed with formal

submittal documentation prior to finalizing piping design.

PFS-WM-PTA or PTB- Pipe tap pressure tap connection

The PFS-WM-PTA and PFS-WM-3FB are PFS WedgetypeTM flow element styles that are each fitted with standard pipe tap
pressure connections for secondary instrument impulse line hook up. These tap connections are typically NPT internal threaded
connections, though others are available on special request.

This style PFS WedgetypeTM flow element is intended for clear liquid, gas or steam service, where the line fluid does not contain
undissolved secondary phase particulate matter, or in any way exhibit the propensity to block the tap holes.

All data is subject to change, and should be confirmed with formal submittal documentation prior to finalizing piping
design.

A horizontal orientation is preferred and typical for most virtue of proper venting and compensation for relative
differences in impulse/tap elevations.

Straight Pipe Requirement

Figure 9: Recommended Installation The PFS WedgetypeTM flow element will produce the
Orientation performance envelope profiled elsewhere hereunder subject
to the nature of the process piping and disturbers located
therein.

As with most flow meters, straight (unrestricted) piping

upstream and downstream of the flow element is preferred
and will produce better results and accuracy.

Providing adequate straight piping upstream and

downstream, however, can significantly normalize the
performance accuracy, despite the presence of disturbers.

General guidance is offered in Table 9 below with all

dimensions provided being considered from the apex of the
wedge element.
