Chapter 1, 2 & 3

Last Submission date: 16/10/2014

1. Laminar is very important in industry. One of the industries that rely on the laminar flow is in
water oil separation.
a. Describe the characteristic of laminar flow
b. Give an example of equipment that relies on laminar flow. Describe the working
mechanism of this equipment to separate the water and oil mixture.

(7 marks)

2. 0.015 m3/s of acetic acid is pumped through a 75mm diameter horizontal pipe 70 long. What
is the pressure drop and head loss in the pipe?
Given:
Viscosity of acid = 2.5mNs/m2, density of acid = 1060 kg/m3, and roughness of pipe surface
= 6 x 10-5 m. (7 marks)

3. Find the drop in pressure due to friction in a glazed porcelain pipe 300 m long and 150 mm
diameter when water is flowing at the rate of 0.05 m3/s. Take the roughness of the pipe
surface as 0.00006m. (7 marks)

4. A petroleum product of viscosity 0.05 mNs/m2 and density 700 kg/m3 is pumped through a
pipe of 0.15 m diameter to storage tanks situated 100 m away. The pressure drop along the
pipe is 70 kN/m2. The pipeline has to be repaired and it is necessary to pump the liquid by
an alternative route consisting of 70 m of 20 cm pipe followed by 50 m of 10 cm pipe. If the
existing pump is capable of developing a pressure of 300 N/m2, will it be suitable for use
during the period required for the repairs? Take the roughness of the pipe surface as
0.00005 m. (12 marks)

5. Nitrogen at 12 MN/m2 is fed through a 25 mm diameter mild steel pipe to a synthetic

ammonia plant at the rate of 1.25 kg/s. What will be the drop in pressure over a 30 m length
of pipe for isothermal flow of the gas at 298 K If the mean pressure (Pm) is assumed as
10MN/m2?
Given: e = 0.005 mm, molecular weight of N2 = 28kg/kmol
molecular volume @ STP = 22.4 m3/kmol, Viscosity of nitrogen = 0.02 mN s/m2.
(12 marks)

6. A vacuum line with 35m length and 0.25mm diameter was used to carry air isothermally at
295K, the pressure in pipe was fall from 2kN/m2 to 1kN/m2. Find the mass flowrate of the air
if the Reynolds number is assume 1.0 x 105 and the relative roughness (e/d) is 0.002.

Given: molecular weight of air = 29kg/kmol , molecular volume @ STP = 22.4 m3/kmol,

viscosity of air = 0.01 mNs/m2 (12 marks)
