MT2800 Linear Algebra, Sheet 2

To be returned on Tuesday 10th October

I will keep a record of how many questions you made a decent at-
tempt on. I can provide you with additional feedback if you want it.
Many students don’t collect their feedback so if you don’t want addi-
tional feedback, please state it on your homework. Otherwise, if you
make a decent attempt of N questions, you can request feedback on
b N2 c questions (note the use of the floor function here). Please indi-
cate which questions you’d like feedback (if you don’t indicate what
feedback you want, I’ll assume you don’t want any).
(1) For the following functions, prove that they are linear transfor-
mations and find bases for both N (T ) and R(T ). Then compute
the nullity and the rank and verify the dimension theorem. Fi-
nally, determine which functions are injective or surjective (us-
ing results from the lecture!)
This question is rather long. Please write down the solution
to a) very carefully. If you then have the feeling that you do
not need more practice is showing that a function is linear you
can leave this part out in b),c),d)..
(a) T1 : R3 → R2 , T1 (a, b, c) = (a − b, 2c).
(b) T2 : R2 → R3 , T (a, b) = (a + b, 0, 2a − b)
(c) T3 : M2×3 (F) → M2×2 (F)

a11 a12 a13 2a11 − a12 a13 + 2a12
T =
a21 a22 a23 0 0
(d) T4 : P2 (R) → P3 (R), T4 (f (x)) = xf (x) + f 0 (x).
(2) Suppose that T : R2 → R2 is linear, T (1, 0) = (1, 4) and
T (1, 1) = (2, 5). What is T (2, 3)? Is T injective? Is T sur-
jective? Is T bijective?
(3) Let V, W be vector spaces over F and let T : V → W be a linear
map. Suppose v1 , . . . , vn is a basis for V and that T is bijective.
Prove that T (v1 ), . . . , T (vn ) is a basis for W .
(4) Let V be the vector space of all infinite sequences over R. Define
the functions T1 , T2 : V → V by
T1 (a1 , a2 , . . .) = (a2 , a3 , . . .) and T2 (a1 , a2 , . . .) = (0, a1 , a2 , . . .).
T1 is called the left shift and T2 is called the right shift operator
on V .
(a) Prove that T1 and T2 are linear.
(b) Prove that T1 is surjective but not injective.

(c) Prove that T2 is injective but not surjective.

This exercise shows that if the underlying vector spaces are
infinite there are surjective maps that are not injective and vice
versa.
