INTRODUCTION

I had intern observation at Elite International school for two weeks. The Elite
International School was founded in 2005. Elite International School has half of
the American,British,Philippin,Mongolian,Russian,Nigerian,Kazakh teachers and
half of the Turkish as well. Ulaanbaatar Elite Internatıonal School attended the top
20 school selection which was organized among the schools in Mongolia and
become one of them. Teachers have professional teaching qualifications and are
selected for their enthusiasm as well as their ability. I choose this school because
I believed I could make use of it. I observed 5th and 6th grades. I observed main
course. I chose this lesson because this lesson includes; grammar ,writing,
speaking ,listening and also very convenient useful practical for the activity and
to gain experience.

At firstly I got to know Mr. Kris then I’ve met my mentor, Kris on the first day
of my internship. Firstly, he explained and gave me information on the subjects
and the classes he taught. He then asked me, which subject I wanted to teach. My
choice was to teach the main course class, because from what I understood main
course included topics such as, reading, writing, speaking and grammar. I made
this choice for the fact that I wanted to improve myself on these aspects of
English. After I made my choice, Mr. Kris informed on where they last left off and
he gave me general knowledge of the learning capabilities of each student
present in that class. Mr. Kris instructed about scheduled lessons according to
the curriculum and about the state of the students. After he told me observe
some lessons. So the first week I observed of Mr. Kris’ lessons.

Mr. Kris introduced me to the class I would be responsible for. I took my

mentor’s advice and seat in his classes to acquire much needed experience. Mr.
Kris was following a book named Course Book. They taught the class I observed
them to get better knowledge on what I was lacking.

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
In my first week I sat in a place where I had a clear view of the classroom.
Everywhere in the classroom was colourful. Desks were suitable for students’
age. It was like a play room so students were able to concentrate the lesson. Both
their age and class were handicap for teacher to tell lesson. Teacher was a
British. His pronunciation was clear. He used body language while telling and he
told the lesson by the aid of games and songs.
Classrooms were large and well-ventilated but control of the students was
really hard for teacher. Students were active. Students’ setting arrangement was
not traditional system and this was appropriate for modern education system.
There were a smart board, computer and lockers for students’ materials. Teacher
had many opportunities for teaching because school was private. He used
sometimes grammar translation method because of students’ level. Actually he
could use his body language or materials to be understandable.

They stood up and walked in the classroom sometimes while teacher was
telling the lesson. School was private so students had a lot of chances to learn
and teacher was really well-equipped. They also had English board that subject of
the day and things learned before on it. Teacher gave stickers when students
knew true answers. Knowing was like a competition. Students liked that. They
were actively attending the lesson. Teacher did not give right of speaking ones
who did not raise their finger.

When I observed students who were in 5th grade class was much more
comfortable not only streaming of the lesson but setting arrangement as well.

In 5th grade, subject was ‘’tenses’’. Teacher wrote 15 sentences. Each

sentence had one tense error. Tenses are Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple
Future, Present Continuous and Present Perfect. Students wrote the sentence
correctly in their notebooks. When all students had completed the activity, a
student was invited to the front of the class to correct the mistake on the board.
Students decided if the correction is indeed correct. Students self-checked own
answers in warm-up stage.

After, When this activity was completed, students identifıed each sentence whıch
used a code in the presentation stage.

Then, Teacher wanted students to open their notebooks and checked answers
and they completed the activity successfully in practice stage.Teacher asked
questions to get an idea about understanding of the students at the end of the
lesson. It provides expert supervision and a constructive feedback and above all
it provides for repeated practice without adverse consequences to the teacher or
his students. It increases confidence of the students to perform activity.

In another lesson, teacher started to lesson distributed worksheet

containing the vocabulary word searched. Word searched contains twenty
vocabulary words studied throughout the term. Students completed word
searched in warm-up stage. Subject was ‘’Vocabulary learning’’.When students
had completed the word searched. They wrote the list of words in their notebooks
in presentation stage. Students then had to decided the ten words they found the
most difficult and wrote the meaning next to the word. Students were able to
consult dictionaries or the course book to completed this task in practice stage.

Students were successful because of the success of word searched.

After lesson, teacher asked students what they would do if they saw Santa
Claus. Students will hopefully respond using the second conditional, if not
teacher could implicitly model answers until a student answered using the
correct form of the second conditional. Teacher wrote the first correct answer
and explores the form of the second conditional. Students copied form into their
notebooks in warm-up stage.

Teacher wrote of second conditionals form on the board.

If + [Past Simple], [Would + Verb]

Or

[Would + Verb] + If + [Past Simple]

Teacher wrote as series of second conditionals on the board with the correct verb
pattern missing. Students answered close questions in their notebook their own
work in the presentation stage.

e.g. We ---------------- (not / be) late again if we ------------- ( buy ) a new car.

Students then wrote a hundred word piece on a choise of topic in practice stage.

a)If your house was on fire, what five items would you save?

Or

b)If you had a time machine, where would you go?

In this lesson, Teacher had spelling test to decide the three class
participants of the English Week Spelling Bee in warm-up stage.Than
Teacher explained about Future Tense in the presentation stage. Students
wrote five questions and answered in the future tense. They paired
together the question with the answer in practice stage.

1)how/people/get to school

2)there/be/more disease

3)Where/we/live

4)There/be/any animals
5)What/we/eat

a)No/Humans/destroy/their habitat

b)They/get/to school/by hovercraft

c)No/all disease/be cured

d)We/eat/only vegetables and fruit

e)We/live/on mars

Teacher gave the homework: study notebooks and course books for
answers in personality stage.

This week I observed how teachers managed the class. I had

a chance to observe two different age group. What techniques they were
using. I checked they were effective or not.

In first lesson, even though students were 5th grade, teacher was so
strict to control class. He was strıct but not despot he was taking students’
attention by love .He was showing his love to the students As I see
students love hım and respect him.

While speaking, he was looking around carefully and when he wanted to

say something to someone in the class, he was looking only at that
student. He used his body language, gestures and mimes for taking
attention of students and kept them awake. He used his voice when there
were a lot of general noise and he wanted to regain control. When teacher
asking questions, he was asking randomly in the class.

In second lesson, students were 6th grade. Teacher was amusing

and lively. Students were happy and as if they were playing games all
together. He was speaking slowly and clearly. He sometimes lost control of
the class. He used often his body language to be understandable. He gave
stars when they attented games and when they made noise he took back
stars. They waited in silent. Because of the games, they had no time to
make noise. All of them wanted to play so when you gave them
responsibility, it was a good way to control class. He called students with
their name and they were happy when they heard their name by the
teacher.

I observed materials in the classroom but especially book used in

the class. Their book was arranged the level of the students. In 6th grade,
book was supported by half picture half text, in six grade generally there
were text and in second grade nearly all book was covered by pictures.
Also there were another materials(projector (smart board), computer,
recordings, flashcards, worksheet e.g.) used in the class. Books were
composed according to current method methodologically. But, I could not
say it was exactly perfect because of the individual differences. In that
time, teacher would decide how to use it in the classroom. There were
different using techniques in the classrooms.

In first class I observed, there was a language that had some

currency outside the classroom and book’s content was interesting for
learner. But teacher used book as his lesson plan. There were instructions
in his book and he followed it step by step. He ignored individual
differences between learners. They were reminded previous lesson and
performed activity whole lesson.

In second class I observed, students were performing activities.

Teacher asked questions students to get answer one by one. After that, he
asked questions according to .the course book and it was easy to them to
get an idea. Teacher intensified students’ knowledge by the aid of watching
video.

In last class I observed, teacher presented the subject. He

followed book during presentation. On the other hand he drawled semantic
map on the board in order to increase awareness in students. After, they
listened to music about the subject. It was really funny and students were
active in the lesson. Teacher managed to take attention. They fulfiled
activities in book but teacher varied activities because of the individual
differences between students.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENTS
The students have been learning English in school classes. After three
years of attending English lessons they know lots of vocabulary. Their
listening skills are acceptable, they like to listen, learning and playing with
in the lessons.

The students prefered speaking and listening to writing or doing

grammar exercises. They dıd not yet know how grammatical structures
work in their first language properly and it causes additional difficulties in
English grammar learning.

The class was based especially on vocabulary learning and grammar.

Students were like playing with words and they were able to absorb them
quickly. Learning through games was very effective. Playing game created
a good atmosphere.

They prefered other skills like speaking, listening and vocabulary

learning. Teacher prepared suitable and enjoyable activity for practising
and developing.

Writing skills were good.Students also don’t like English writing very
much.

Speaking
Speaking is common skill which children generally use very much
especially at the age of 11-12. Although they like to speak, producing a
speech in the second language is quite difficult for them. They use routines
and certain patterns but they are not able to communicate fluently.

Vocabulary learning
The class was based especially on vocabulary learning and grammar.
Students were like playing with words and they were able to absorb them
quickly. Learning through games was very effective.

Reading
When the teacher gave the student story was quite easy to read. But
sometimes students did not feel confident when reading some texts and
exercises. Some of them could read fluently, some of them could not. The
teacher showed them how to read words and sentences, and how to pause
to reflect different punctuations.
Writing
Students do not like English writing very much because of its difficult
spelling. They prefer other skills particularly speaking, listening and
vocabulary learning. The teacher tried to prepare suitable and enjoyable
activitıes for practising and developing writing skills.

Through My İnternship;
I have learned a great deal. The school and the intern taught me
many things. What I understood that teaching is not only giving lessons
but it is also to be a good psychologist and the personality of a teacher and
him approach is very important. A teacher’s role is very significant and
should be in a high level. High motivation makes the English classes an
enjoyable and exciting.

According to my own experience a good teacher should prepare lots

of planning and preparation to create interesting and efficient lessons. It
gives to teach lots of opportunities to be creative children like repeating
and playing with words and they enjoy the games with pleasure.

I have learnt a lot about how to use methods in English teaching

process e.g. lesson planning and management, teaching methods,
motivating students.

The teacher generally used direct method. Because of teacher’s lack

of Mongolian. He taught vocabulary with flashcards or objects.

I have discovered some basic principles. It is necessary to create

friendly atmosphere when you want to present lessons. This atmosphere
makes students to feel safe and confident and they try to use language
without fear of making mistakes. When teaching a lesson I carefully
considered whether it is interesting, motivating, and suitable for children of
eleven years of age and whether all activities give students an opportunity
to develop their language skills.

I am so happy to share my experience.

REPORT
In this 2 weeks practice I had studied how teacher act to the children
and how to teach the lesson. That was a wonderful experience for me. I
learnt how to control the class.

Mr. Kris introduced me to the class I would be responsible for. I took

my mentor’s advice and seat in his classes to acquire much needed
experience. Mr. Kris was following a book named Course Book. They
taught the class I observed them to get better knowledge on what I was

lacking. On our free time we entered the other teacher’s classes to gain
better understanding on different methods used. I enjoyed all the classes I
seat into and it was visible that most students had an amazing time in the
class. General the classes were taught by basically fun activities to get
students participating and being involved with the subject.

What drew my attention the most was that teachers interchanged their
teaching methods depending on the teaching methods necessary for
specific class. The reason for this was that while some classes were active
others were a bit more quite. One thing that stood out to me was that Mr.
Kris reviewed the previous topic each class before moving on to the new.
He explained that this would ensure that each students understands the
topic fully and if not it can give the students to ask further questions. He
mostly chose to show visual activities to the students. Since this class was
mainly quite, having them participate in class activities was the main goal
and objective.

I learned a lot from this experience. I learned that being a teacher

doesn’t only consist of teaching but it also involves bein a good example
for the students. Being a good role model and having someone to look up
to for kids is essential. Kids pick up on teacher’s behavior whether it be the
way teachers carry themselves or the speaking tones they use, in and
outside of the classroom. The profession of teaching is hard but has its
perks as well. Within the 2 weeks of my internship the 5th class was very
respectful towards me. I learned a lot from Mr. Kris, such as, how to
maintain and control a classroom and what activities are useful for each
topic.
