FEDs are the components that are used to provide fibre channel connectivity to
the Storage Area Network (SAN) where the “storage consumers” can request
I/O services from the storage system.

BEDs are the components that connect the RAID groups in the “back end” of the
storage system to the other components of the storage controller.

The disk controller is made up of five main component types: BEDs, FEDs, the Grid
Switch, cache memory and microprocessors.

There are two or four of these installed per chassis. Each board includes one Intel
2.33GHz Core Duo Intel Xeon® CPU with four processor cores. There is 4GB of local
DDR2 RAM on each board

Logical DEVices (up to 16,320 LDEVs per VSD) that are assigned to that board. No other VSD board can process
I/Os for these LDEVs.

The VSP architecture supports two different DKU structures: 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch.
These two different types of disk chassis can be mixed in any combination within a
one or two control chassis VSP system configuration.
