PAVEMENT ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

INTRODUCTION
Pavement surface is important for rad traffic safety and operations. With the study of
the different level of pavement surface. It allow for better grid between vehicles tires and road
surface. Most road surfaces have adequate performance in the dry condition as compared
during wet condition. The presence of water between tires and road surface reduce the contact
area which is needed to create the grid.
The characteristics of pavement surface texture which enable vehicle’s tire to grid
effectively and efficiently to the road surface is important for safety on the road especially at
hig speed of travel. For speed over about 60km/hr, the pavement macrotexture is necessary to
prevent hydroplaning by helping water escape from the tyre-pavement interface. The depth of
the macrotexture which create voids or channels and its connectivity play an important role of
water dispersion between tyre and road surface.
The slipperiness of surface pavement can be measured either in terms of friction
between a freely-spinning wheel and the pavement surface. One of the pavement of the
requirements of surface pavement is skid resistance. With skid resistance it allow better grid
between tires and road surface.

OBJECTIVES
1. To determine the texture depth classification of the road surface.
2. To determine the effect of the mean texture depth (MTD) and connectivity on surface
water dipersion ( to evaluate the pavement surface texture drainage )
3. To determine the skid resistance value of the road pavement surface.

APPARATUS
 Sand
 Ruler
 Broom
 Pendulum skid resistance tester
 Outflow meter
 Stopwatch
PROCEDURE
Sand patch test :
i. The spot on the road to be tested was selected and cleaned.
ii. A known volume of sand were spread on the road surface circularly.
iii. The diameter of the sand were measured 3 times for average diameter of the sand.
iv. Step i to iii was repeated at 3 different loaction.
Skid resistance test :
i. The spot on the road to be tested was selected and cleaned.
ii. The pendulum skid resistance tester was set up.
iii. The swinging arm clear of the road was raised and clamped in the horizontal position
and the arm were released ( make sure the pointer reads zero).
iv. With the pendulum free and hanging vertically, the spacer was placed attached to a
chain on the base of the column, under the lifting handle setting screw to raise the
slider. The head of tester was lowered so that the slider touched the road surface and
clamped in position. The Spacer was removed.
v. The sliding length of the rubber slider was checked over the road surface by gently
lowered the pendulum arm until the slider touched the surface first on the one side of
the vertical and then on the other. ( the sliding length should be between 125mm and
127mm )
vi. The pendulum arm was placed in horizontal and clamped in the position.
vii. The pointer was bring to its stop and the pendulum was released by pressing the
button. ( catch the arm on it return swing before it hits the ground )
viii. The mean of 3 successive readings were recorded.
ix. The test was repeated on the wetting surface and 3 different location.
Surface drainage test :
i. The spot on the road to be tested was selected and cleaned.
ii. The ouflow meter was set up. ( make sure the stopper close the hole of the outflow
meter )
iii. Two person with the same weight were step on the plain wood to make sure the
neoprene gasket surface of the bottom outflow meter was touched to the road surface
completely.
iv. The outflow meter was filled with water until 2500ml.
v. The stopper was taken out to let the water drain out and the stopwatch was used to
take the time taken.
vi. Until the water reached 500ml, the time taken was recorded.
vii. The test was repeated at 3 different location.
