Tutorial IV

Development of Network
1. What do you understand by fulkerson's rule for numbering the events? Give
name of the activities and event number as per fulkerson's rule.

2. Activities for a project of casting of R.C.C. Beam over the door opening, are
given below in random order. Arrange them in a proper sequence, using an
appropriate logic, assign time duration to each activity and draw the network,
and show all activities in network. Mix and produce concrete, design the beam,
order for wooden forms, bending of reinforcement, order concrete materials,
set concrete mixer at site, curing stage 1, preparation of form, erection of
forms, order for steel reinforcement, strip off side forms, place and compact the
concrete, place the reinforcement, curing stage II, strip off the bottom form
work, design concrete mix proportion.

3. Draw Network for following data.

IPA Activity IPA Activity

- A K,C,I,A H

- I E L

- C L,O B

- N B J

C E L,O,D,H F

C,I O D,H G

C,I,A D G M

N K

4. Develop the network for the following data.

IPA Activities IPA Activities IPA Activities

L A C F F K

F,H B H G ---- L

L C A H D,E M

K D B I

I,J E G J

5. Develop the network for following data

IPA Activity
- A
- B
- C
A D
A,B,C E
C F
D,E G
D,E H
D,E,F I

6. Develop a network on the A_O_A system for a job with following activities
and logical sequence.

1. A is the first activity

2. B and C can be performed in parallel, and are immediate successor to A
3. D,E and F follows B.
4. G follows E
5. H follows D, but it cannot start until E is complete
6. I and J succeed G
7. F and J precede K
8. H and I precede L
9. M succeeds L and K

10. the last activity is N succeeds M and C

7. Draw a network for the following relationships in a project:

1. A is the start event and K is the end event

2. Event B depends on event A
3. C and D are successor events to B
4. D is the preceding event to G
5. E occurs after event C
6. E precedes F
7. C restrains the occurrence of G and G preceded H
8. H precedes J
9. F restrains the occurrence of H
10. K succeeds event J

7. Draw a network diagram from the following list of relationships among the activities:
Activity Immediate Predecessors Activity Immediate Predecessors
A -- L K
B A M K
C B N K
D C O D
E B P O
F E Q B
G E R N
H C S L,M
I C,F T S
J G,H,I U P,Q
K J V U
8. A kalupur bank has taken up the project to modernize one of its branch offices. Some
of the existing office equipments will be disposed of but the remaining will be
returned to the branch on the completion of the renovation work. Tenders are invited
from a number of selected contractors. The contractors will be responsible for all the
activities in connection with the renovation work excepting the prior removal of the
old equipment and its subsequent replacement. The major elements of the project
have been identified as follows along with their durations and immediately preceding
elements. Draw the network and determine the critical path for the project.

Activity Description Immediate

Predecessors
A Obtain tenders from the contractor E
B Select the contractor A
C Arrange details with the selected B
contractors
D Renovations take place K
E Design new premises --
F Decide which equipment is to be used E
G Arrange storage of the equipment F
H Arrange disposal of other equipments F
I Order new equipment F
J Take delivery of new equipments I,L
K Remove old equipments for storage, or , C,G,H
disposal
L Cleaning after the contractor has finished D
M Return old equipment for storage I,L
9. A project has the following relationships:

Activity Preceding Activity

A --
B A
C A
D B
E D
F D
G D
H B
I C,E
J G
K F,I,J
L K
M H,G
N M
Draw a network for the above project and find the critical path along with the project
completion time.
