ECONOMY

Sabak Bernam is considered most rural among the 9 districts of Selangor State. Around 47 percent of
the 997km square kilometers of Sabak Bernam is under agriculture, 40.18 under forest whereas
urban settlements take up less than 5%. The main crops in Sabak Bernam are paddy, coconut and
palm oil. Despite being among the 5 main producers of rice for Malaysia, agriculture is now
sustaining a less economic value to Sabak Bernam. The total rice cultivation area in Sabak Bernam
continue to decrease from 26645 hectars in 2000 to 13375 hectars in 2013 in spite of government
policies and effort to maintain it. However, there is no denying that paddy is still considered a staple
food crop throughout Malaysia.

According to a survey done in Kampung Parit 1 Timur, a rice cultivation area of Sabak Bernam, the
results points out that non-farming activities contributed 80% to total monthly income, therefore
suggesting that people of Sabak Bernam are more dependent on nonfarm activities
