Density and Specific Gravity
Discussions:
1. What property of oil makes it float on water?
The property that makes oil float on water is the differences in the densities
of the two materials. Water is denser then oil. This means that there is more
water mass per unit volume then oil mass per unit volume; therefore,
water will sink and oil will rise.

2. Why would heating the gas in an air balloon make the balloon rise?
Hot-air balloons float because the air trapped inside the balloon is heated
up by a burner, making it less dense than the air outside. Here's another way
to think of it. You've probably heard people say that heat rises, by which they
really mean that hot air rises.
3. What is the difference between density and specific gravity?
Density is defined as amount of matter per unit volume. This means in a
given space , how much mass or simply a matter occupy space. Specific
Gravity is a dimensionless quantity. It is the ratio of density of the substance
to the density of reference ( water ,air,petrol.. depends on our choice)
substance.
4. How does a graph help us interpret scientific data?
It allows you to see a change in the data and use it to predict
possible changes
5. An object made of aluminum has a mass of 8.37 g. When it was placed
in a graduated cylinder containing 20.0 mL of water, the water level
rise to 23.1 mL. Calculate the density and specific gravity of the object.
6.What is the mass of a solution that has a density of 0.775 g/mL and a
volume of 50.0 mL?
7.What is the volume of a solution that has a specific gravity of 1.2 and a
mass of 185 g?
8. If we have salt water and fresh water in one container, which one of
them is float above the other?
fresh water will "float" on top of salt water.
9. If we heated the fresh water to 80 oC, is the density is becomes higher
or lower than it value at standard conditions?
Density become lower
10. if we heated the liquid, is the specific gravity is increased or
decreased with temperature rise?
specific gravity is decreased with temperature rise because the density of
liquid is decreased by temperature rising.
