Abstract
The process of checking the stress developed in the piping due to various loading is called Pipe Stress Analysis or
Flexibility analysis. Flexibility is also a crucial factor in piping system. When the ambient temperature rises, the
expansion will generates a colossal force, which can impulse the joints out of configuration of the entire system.
But generally, in piping both ends are connected together with equipments. The expansion force acts on
equipment or a structure or whatever the pipe is connected to the equipments. If it is flexible, the piping system
absorbs the expansion and there is no force on to the connected equipment.
This paper presents instigating decision-making on pipe stress analysis through the application of knowledge-
based systems (KBS). Stress analysis, as part of the design and analysis of process pipe networks, serves to
identify whether a given pipe arrangement can cope with weight, thermal, and pressure stress at safe operation
levels. An iterative process of design and analysis cycle is done routinely by engineers while analyzing the existing
networks or while designing the process pipe networks. In our proposal, the KBS establishes a bidirectional
communication with the current engineering software for pipe stress analysis, so that the user benefits from this
integration. The stress analysis knowledge base is constructed by registering the senior engineers' know-how. The
engineers' overall strategy to follow up during the pipe stress analysis, to some extent contained by the KBS, is
presented. Recompenses in saving engineering man-hours and practicality in guiding specialists in pipe stress
analysis are the foremost services for the process industry.
Purpose of piping stress analysis is to ensure following most essential requirements. 1. Safety of piping and piping
components. 2. Safety of connected equipment and supporting structure. 3. Piping deflections are within the
limits. 4. Gravity and Temperature changes. 5. Internal and external pressures. 6. Changes in fluid flow rate. 7.
Wind and Seismic activity. Keywords: Decision making-Pipe stress analysis- Knowledge-Based Systems-Primary-

This paper discusses very elementary topic, not of good quality.

The authors have come up with a very good concept of guiding young engineers by KBS. I would have titled the
paper as "Sanity check of computerized design of piping system - an application of Knowledge Based Approach
(KBA)". The authors are advised to call it KBA rather than KBS. In the field, it is often seen that a minor change in

bounday conditions or support conditions can drastically alter the stress pattern. The authors are advised to
revise the abstract and introduction and highlight how not performing the sanity check by experience on the
software results can be dangerous and unsafe. The authors are advised to create a table of common observations
in the first column and the remedy in the second columns and the third columns, titled as "Sanity Check" column
where crucial warnings should be highlighted. Example of sanity check warning can be "is frequency increasing
with increasing temperature?" is the answer is yes, there are some problems with the support or boundary
conditions. So, the three columns would be 1. Example number and Observation (what happens in the field,
increasing frequency with temperature increase) 2. Reasons 3. Sanity check (warning signs) . In today's
environment, young engineers are not guided about the sanity check in the field and hence are at risk of
designing unsafe systems. The table explained above will summarize the author's experience in this regard. In the
conclusion, a comment can be added for the universities to organize at least one three hour lecture by an
expererience professional from the field on sanity check. A formula resulting in negative damping is also an
example of sanity check. Negative damping means energy is being added to a dynamic system which is
unrealistic.
