Linking sounds in Portuguese

1. Nasal diphthongs followed by vowel
Diphthongs are formed by a vowel plus a semivowel. Nasal diphthongs are formed by a nasal
vowel plus a nasal semi vowel. Portuguese has two nasal semivowels: [j ̃] and [w̃ ]

vowel + j ̃ Examples vowel + w̃ Examples

[ɐ̃j ̃] mãe [ɐ̃w̃] não, foram

[ẽj ̃] bem [õw̃ ] bom

[ĩj ̃] sim, em [ũw̃ ] um

[õj ̃] põe

[ũj ̃] muito*
When these diphthongs are at the end of a word and the next word begins with a vowel sound,
it is important to articulate them together properly. It is quite simple:

• j ̃-diphthongs articulate with a ‘nh’ sound: ɲ

• w̃ -diphthongs articulate with the w̃ sound itself

* The diphthong [ũj ̃] only occurs in the word ‘muito’, so it is never at the end of a word.

In fact, this also happens with oral diphthongs, but it doesn’t present that much of a challenge:

• vai jagora
• céu wazul
Identify where in these sentences you must articulate nasal diphthongs and practice them:

• Põe isso bem aqui que um homem vem arrumar depois.

• Não conseguiram um assento em nenhum avião! Nem um!

• Em Andorra falam catalão com um sotaque diferente.

• Sim, eu vim olhar também a casa, mas sem a Amanda.

• Eles sempre estão aqui com a mãe horrível deles, mas assim as coisas são.

2. Merging unstressed vowels

If a word ends in an unstressed vowel sound and the next word begin with the same unstressed
vowel, they merge and are thus pronounced in the same syllable, as one sound.

moça + aqui mo.ça.qui

leve + encontro le.ven.con.tro
menino + humilde me.ni.nu.mil.de

However, the merging into one syllable can happen also between different unstressed vowels.

moça + obediente mo.çao.be.di.en.te

leve + azul le.vea.zul
menino + heróico me.ni.noe.rói.co

1. The [ɐ] sound in these cases can even disappear: ‘moça obediente’ ['mo.so.be.ʤi.'ẽ.tʃɪ]
2. Even 3 sounds can merge in one syllable: ‘leve azul’ ['lɛ.vɪɐ.'zuw] vs. ‘leve e azul’ ['lɛ.vɪja.'zuw]

Identify in the sentences above where you should merge unstressed vowels.

syllable of each line). Which unstressed vowels should be merge so the poem will scan?

chorando como uma criança
que viu que não eram verdade
o seu sonho e a sua esperança.

A chuva bate-me no rosto

e em meus cabelos sopra o vento.
Vão-se desfazendo em desgosto

perpassa o tumulto nos ares,
