Chapter 11
Problem #3

Use the single-channel drive-up bank teller operation referred to in Problems 1 and 2 to
determine the following operating characteristics for the system:

A. The probability that no customers are in the system

P0 = 1-(λ/μ)=1-(0.4/0.6)
=0.3333
There is a 0.3333 probability that no customers are in the system.

B. The average number of customers waiting

Lq =λ^2/μ(μ-λ)=(0.4)^2/0.6(0.6-0.4)
=1.3333
The average number of customers waiting is 1.3333.

C. The average number of customers in the system

L =Lq + (λ/μ) = 1.3333 +(0.4)/0.6
=2
The average number of customers in the system is 2.

D. The average time a customer spends waiting

Wq =Lq/λ =1.3333/0.4
= 3.3333 min.
The average time a customer spends waiting is 3.3333 minutes.

E. The average time a customer spends in the system

W =Wq +1/μ = 3.3333 +(1/0.6)
= 5 min.
The average time a customer spends in the system is 5 minutes.

F. The probability that arriving customers will have to wait for service
Pw=λ/μ=0.4/0.6
=0.6667
The probability that arriving customers will have to wait for service is 0.6667.
