Maungaturoto Matters
Non-profit organisations are urged to send in articles to
promote themselves, especially those that have paid up for
the year and are entitled to a free quarter page space. We
would love to hear from you! If you have an item you want
mentioned in the “Matters” you can either contact me at the
address below or drop it into the RED BOX in the window at
Tony’s Stationers in Hurndall Street. If it is an advert the
fees are printed on the top right of Page 1.
Please note we do not usually accept photographs as
they do not copy very well and the effect is often
lost; and we do not accept “Letters to the Editor”
as we do not have enough room to print them.

Jeff & Barbara Stewart of Waipu launched a new career when they took over the
Maungaturoto Rural Post round late last year.
Six days a week the Rural Post vehicle travels 200km, only 60 of which are sealed,
and delivers mail and newspapers to 360 RD1 to RD4 letterboxes.
The job takes about 10 hours a day and a member of the team - which includes the
Stewarts and three employees - arrives at Tony’s at 6am daily to sort mail.
When the Stewarts took over NZ Post required them to do the run in one vehicle and
with one sorting case - as opposed to two of each. This money-saving tactic means
some people now get their mail in the afternoon.
The Stewarts, who have three children aged four, 8 and 11, had been looking for a
rural delivery run for a while when the Maungaturoto opportunity came up.
Jeff works part-time for Air New Zealand and due to the demands of the mail run,
they’ve downsized the menagerie on their two-acre lifestyle block. Their two
‘Houdini’ goats have gone largely because they dined on a newly planted garden, and
they now have one calf. When calf club season comes a couple of goats, which
(thankfully) can be returned to their owners, will take up residence.
Barbara says life here is very different from her home country Switzerland where she
skied to school as a child. She has a soft spot for goats, possibly because Saanen
goats - the short-haired white variety - originate from her hometown, Saanen, which
is near Gstaad the famous ski village. She met Jeff in her travels and has lived here
for 20 years.
Since they started the round, Barbara has focused on ensuring people are registered
to receive mail and will soon turn her attention to letterboxes.
Here are a couple of tips:
∗ You need to register to get mail: If you’re new to the area or move
house, please fill in a NZ Post application form (they’re at Tony’s). Then
Barbara and Jeff can deliver mail to you and they’ll have the correct num-
ber of newspapers and flyers for your delivery run.
∗ Please have a user-friendly mail box: The mail team opens and closes
360 boxes a day. Barbara says it’s great delivering to mail boxes by the
roadside, which open and close easily and which are large enough for the
mail. But it’s less fun dealing with ill-tempered boxes that have sharp
metal edges, are too small or have wobbly poles that topple easily. So
please , make life easier for our mail team and ensure your letterbox does
its job.

ALSO
Most of you will be aware that from Monday 31st July, the country will introduce new coins -
10c, 20c and 50c. As well, the 5c piece is being withdrawn.
From that date we will be supplying the new coins to Retailers who will take the old ones out of circu-
lation as they come across their counter.
As well, the Exchange will swap your old money for new or provide coin bags so you can bank into
your Whangarei branch in the usual way.
HOWEVER, if you bring in a piggy bank or a money jar it will need to be left for sorting and count-
ing as it will be very time consuming. We want to avoid a queue stretching out the front door and
along the footpath!!
Remember, the old coins are still legal tender for three months, but after that they will need be re-
deemed at the Reserve Bank. The change-over will be a big job and there will be some delays. As
long as there are smiley faces on both sides of the counter, we will come through fine.
For further information please ask Debbie at the Money Exchange or any Committee Member

Overhanging Vegetation
During the next two months we are going to be sending out a flyer to all residents reminding them of their
responsibilities
regarding vegetation encroaching onto footpaths. We continually get complaints from residents and it is
not only of particular nuisance to pedestrians but it can also cause visibility issues for motorists. So come
on everyone, let’s make an effort and have our roadside vegetation cleaned up and keep Kaipara beautiful.
Unsealed Road Stabilisation
Seventeen roads around the District will have stabilisation work done on historically wet or high mainte-
nance sections. This will deliver a pavement that remains robust and will be undertaken progressively over
winter and spring to suit the weather conditions.
Bridge Guard-railing
Eleven bridges across the District are having guard-railing erected to make them safer. Work commenced
in July and is due to be completed by the end of August. The bridges that are to receive the guard-rails are
two on Mountain Road, three on Tinopai Road, three on Pukehuia Road, two on Tangowahanie Valley
Road and one on Valley Road.
We have just received our new rates notice from the Council, with the Mayor’s newsletter on keep-
ing Kaipara beautiful.
Most people keep their road frontages neat and tidy, but we do have other people with no pride and
‘hoons’ who undo the good work.
Has anyone noticed the bogged up lawn verges just up Whaka Street and Gorge Road, as well as a big
Ute parked the wrong way around on the footpath outside the Presbyterian Church. The path was
pretty well blocked for about a week.
We still see people dumping their lawn clippings over the road, especially up Gorge Road.
We also see Council workers picking up rubbish along the road and streets, doing a great job, but at
a cost to us all.
It is not very hard for motorists to take their rubbish home, instead of tossing it out of the car
windows (especially glass).
Let’s support Mayor Peter and be tidy ‘Kiwis”.
Maungaturoto can be proud of its achievements over the years and deserves to be kept attractive.

FARM LIVING
Ballerina Bull invades the Broccoli Patch
“Great. You’re just in time to save the world,” says Rex when I walk into the living room af-
ter I’ve been to a meeting in town.
It’s a Thursday. It’s mid morning. It’s raining. He’s lolling in his armchair watching a B-
grade sci-fi movie.
While the rest of us do high-powered and important tasks, the weather gives farmers an ex-
cuse not to farm. The grass isn’t growing and there’s mud everywhere, so farming’s no fun.
The livestock aren’t happy either. They’re not used to grass as short as Shrek’s stubble -
the monster, not the sheep - so escapees in search of food are rampant.
If there’s a weak point in a fence, they’ll find it. A flock of sheep minus shepherd was re-
cently spotted near downtown Paparoa, I saw a bunch trotting along near town, and de-
terred a small mob preparing to jump a cattle stop.
One evening a white bull left his paddock and dined on kikuyu near the house. Then, in the
dead of night he surprised us by cruising past Tony’s dogs, up the drive, through the vegeta-
ble garden (agghhh….) and into the house paddock which has the most useless half-cocked
fence imaginable.
Don’t ask me why. Tony and Rex spend lots of time fencing, but never repair the fences
around our house or Rex’s parents’ house where seven bulls recently feasted on the lawn.
The bull that meandered through the garden has a future as a ballerina. He missed 12 let-
tuces and left 10 hoof prints in the broccoli patch where, amazingly, he exterminated only
one plant. He left 13 survivors and even missed teeny rainbow chard that are still blinking in
the daylight as they adapt to the idea they’re no longer seeds.
He camped placidly by the gate at the top of the hill until I let him into the neighbouring
paddock because I suspected he was plotting to return through the garden.
Rex was so unconcerned the garden was under threat I finally realised he wanted the bull to
eat the veggies. We can buy them at the supermarket any day, but cattle food is not so
readily available.
Then the yearling bulls, which usually spend winter going from one subdivided paddock-ette
to the next, started rambling all over the hillside. I mentioned this aberration to Rex who
said ruefully: “There’s no grass so I’ve given up that grazing system.”
Then more cattle arrive near the house and I’m sure my veggie garden is once again under
threat. I mutter so darkly about this Rex returns them to their paddock forthwith, muttering
even more darkly about the ringleader, a ‘Houdini’ Hereford who led another escape the next
night.
This time he sent them galloping to the far corner of their paddock and they haven’t been
back since.
So . . . he saved the lettuce and broccoli, which was great. And in case you’re wondering,
we didn’t need to save the world. The aliens in the movie got beaten by the good guys - as
they always do.
