I seemed to have missed an awful lot whilst I was away, Girl’s Indulgence Evening in May, Karen Davy
at the RSA, the Business Association Gala Dinner, productions at Otamatea Repertory Theatre. Bee
Gee’s at the Country Club. What a wonderful array of entertainment!
I also heard that Maura and Peter Flower once again ran a ‘Kidz” Idol during the school holiday com-
pleting it with a wonderful show from the children.
Now as you know, it is not the policy of the Maungaturoto Matters to publish letters, but for once I have
made an exception, as these are really “Thank You” acknowledgements, once more recognizing how
much happens in our town and the people behind them.

Get to know your Rural Delivery People

Jeff & Barbara Stewart of Waipu launched a new career when they took over the
Maungaturoto Rural Post round late last year.
Six days a week the Rural Post vehicle travels 200km, only 60 of which are sealed,
and delivers mail and newspapers to 360 RD1 to RD4 letterboxes.
The job takes about 10 hours a day and a member of the team - which includes the
Stewarts and three employees - arrives at Tony’s at 6am daily to sort mail.
When the Stewarts took over NZ Post required them to do the run in one vehicle and
with one sorting case - as opposed to two of each. This money-saving tactic means
some people now get their mail in the afternoon.
The Stewarts, who have three children aged four, 8 and 11, had been looking for a
rural delivery run for a while when the Maungaturoto opportunity came up.
Jeff works part-time for Air New Zealand and due to the demands of the mail run,
they’ve downsized the menagerie on their two-acre lifestyle block. Their two
‘Houdini’ goats have gone largely because they dined on a newly planted garden, and
they now have one calf. When calf club season comes a couple of goats, which
(thankfully) can be returned to their owners, will take up residence.
Barbara says life here is very different from her home country Switzerland where she
skied to school as a child. She has a soft spot for goats, possibly because Saanen
goats - the short-haired white variety - originate from her hometown, Saanen, which
is near Gstaad the famous ski village. She met Jeff in her travels and has lived here
for 20 years.
Since they started the round, Barbara has focused on ensuring people are registered
to receive mail and will soon turn her attention to letterboxes.
Here are a couple of tips:
∗ You need to register to get mail: If you’re new to the area or move
house, please fill in a NZ Post application form (they’re at Tony’s). Then
Barbara and Jeff can deliver mail to you and they’ll have the correct num-
ber of newspapers and flyers for your delivery run.
∗ Please have a user-friendly mail box: The mail team opens and closes
360 boxes a day. Barbara says it’s great delivering to mail boxes by the
roadside, which open and close easily and which are large enough for the
mail. But it’s less fun dealing with ill-tempered boxes that have sharp
metal edges, are too small or have wobbly poles that topple easily. So
please , make life easier for our mail team and ensure your letterbox does
its job.

MAUNGATUROTO MONEY EXCHANGE

INTRODUCTION OF NEW COINS

Most of you will be aware that from Monday 31st July, the country will introduce new coins -
10c, 20c and 50c. As well, the 5c piece is being withdrawn.

From that date we will be supplying the new coins to Retailers who will take the old ones out of circu-
lation as they come across their counter.

As well, the Exchange will swap your old money for new or provide coin bags so you can bank into
your Whangarei branch in the usual way.

HOWEVER, if you bring in a piggy bank or a money jar it will need to be left for sorting and count-
ing as it will be very time consuming. We want to avoid a queue stretching out the front door and
along the footpath!!

Remember, the old coins are still legal tender for three months, but after that they will need be re-
deemed at the Reserve Bank. The change-over will be a big job and there will be some delays. As
long as there are smiley faces on both sides of the counter, we will come through fine.

For further information please ask Debbie at the Money Exchange or any Committee Member

Homebuilders Community House

Good Morning August and we hope to see a slight improvement in the weather, the cold
winter and many frosts has knocked us all this year, does this mean a nice spring???
Hope so!
Well down to the important stuff
Our Good old day’s group.
This has been growing steadily, which is wonderful and we are delighted with the way it has
gone unfortunately its getting too big for our little house. NO… don’t worry we are not going to stop
it....we are going to expand it…and no it is not leaving town…what are we going to do..It’s a puz-
zle isn’t it? After much talking and consideration, we are going to have it twice a month.
There you go isn’t that great.
We are splitting the group in two and giving the members a choice of the 1st Wed of the month or
the 3rd Wed of the month. Each person will still only come once a month and by invitation only. So
if you can’t make one Wed, we can invite you to the next scheduled day. Hope you can under-
stand all that, we will explain it to you when we phone and the next lunch is set for the Wed 2nd
August. Ann will phone you all and see what your preference is. We hope this works out and ex-
pect it may be better for some people that couldn’t come before to have the choice of days. So we
look forward to seeing some of you on the 2nd August same time 11am, same place, Homebuilders
House.
Now onto the next most important thing…our food bank.
Once again we look into our cupboards and they are bare, several needs have been met over
this cold winter period and we have cleaned out our stores. We do still provide the service by
way of buying from the local supermarket but this can become costly to our bank balance and
we don’t have enough money in our budget to give as much as we would like to. So here is my
plea, once again we need you, the community, to donate whatever you can to our food Bank. We
will accept any food items that you feel able to give, if you wish to donate money that is also ap-
preciated and will be spent on filling our shelves with the type of essential food that people may
need to get over that hard patch. This has been a godsend to many and we intend to continue
with this service, it just needs a boost every now and then. So please give if you can and re-
member you may need this help one day, what goes around, comes around, so they say!
Workshops
Our relationship workshop is underway again with Heidi Downey at the head and it’s about
living with confidence this time, this started on the 31st July. So if you didn’t know you may
still join in to complete the year’s course
That’s about it for this month, as always remember we are here if you need us, or even if you just want a chat to break
up your day, we are open Mon to Friday 10am to 2pm or phone us on 094319080. That’s it from me. Have a good and
safe month.
Regards
Maureen.

From the Mayor’s Letter

Overhanging Vegetation
During the next two months we are going to be sending out a flyer to all residents reminding them of their
responsibilities
regarding vegetation encroaching onto footpaths. We continually get complaints from residents and it is
not only of particular nuisance to pedestrians but it can also cause visibility issues for motorists. So come
on everyone, let’s make an effort and have our roadside vegetation cleaned up and keep Kaipara beautiful.
Unsealed Road Stabilisation
Seventeen roads around the District will have stabilisation work done on historically wet or high mainte-
nance sections. This will deliver a pavement that remains robust and will be undertaken progressively over
winter and spring to suit the weather conditions.
Bridge Guard-railing
Eleven bridges across the District are having guard-railing erected to make them safer. Work commenced
in July and is due to be completed by the end of August. The bridges that are to receive the guard-rails are
two on Mountain Road, three on Tinopai Road, three on Pukehuia Road, two on Tangowahanie Valley
Road and one on Valley Road.

Pride in the Community

By Alan Flower

We have just received our new rates notice from the Council, with the Mayor’s newsletter on keep-
ing Kaipara beautiful.
Most people keep their road frontages neat and tidy, but we do have other people with no pride and
‘hoons’ who undo the good work.
Has anyone noticed the bogged up lawn verges just up Whaka Street and Gorge Road, as well as a big
Ute parked the wrong way around on the footpath outside the Presbyterian Church. The path was
pretty well blocked for about a week.
We still see people dumping their lawn clippings over the road, especially up Gorge Road.
We also see Council workers picking up rubbish along the road and streets, doing a great job, but at
a cost to us all.
It is not very hard for motorists to take their rubbish home, instead of tossing it out of the car
windows (especially glass).
Let’s support Mayor Peter and be tidy ‘Kiwis”.
Maungaturoto can be proud of its achievements over the years and deserves to be kept attractive.

July meeting Wednesday 19th Supper

Room, Centennial Hall.
After a short meeting members then vis-
ited Fluffy and Stuart Duff’s Orchid
House in Batley Road.
We were shown the packing room full
with stems of blooms awaiting to be
wrapped and boxed, after being carefully
checked for imperfections.
We then toured the house with banks of
various colours to be picked - buds to be
tied up - watering and other care is all
very demanding.
All those members who were not with us
missed a wonderful day which was a real
treat - not to mention the super afternoon
tea provided (thank you Fluffy).

RSA NEWSLETTER
RSA Clubrooms – Home from Home
Is it the people? The music? The atmosphere?
Members entering the club on Friday evenings have that comfy, relaxed feeling which draws them in and
engenders a sense of belonging. The warm welcome extends to our visitors as well.

Club Renovations - Future Plans

When the final few nails are knocked in to complete the new kitchen, now fully functioning and beautiful
to see, focus will most likely switch to dining furniture. And renovation plans for the longer-term future
are in the discussion stage.

Friday Dinner
The Committee has determined that there will always be a good meal, often 2 courses, to be had at the club
for around $10, unless there is a special function..

Clubroom Hours
It was great to see some young people enjoying the club facilities recently. The doors and bar are open on
Wednesdays from 6.0pm, and Fridays from 5.0pm.

All members, guests and visitors are warmly welcome.

FARM LIVING
Ballerina Bull invades the Broccoli Patch

“Great. You’re just in time to save the world,” says Rex when I walk into the living room af-
ter I’ve been to a meeting in town.
It’s a Thursday. It’s mid morning. It’s raining. He’s lolling in his armchair watching a B-
grade sci-fi movie.
While the rest of us do high-powered and important tasks, the weather gives farmers an ex-
cuse not to farm. The grass isn’t growing and there’s mud everywhere, so farming’s no fun.
The livestock aren’t happy either. They’re not used to grass as short as Shrek’s stubble -
the monster, not the sheep - so escapees in search of food are rampant.
If there’s a weak point in a fence, they’ll find it. A flock of sheep minus shepherd was re-
cently spotted near downtown Paparoa, I saw a bunch trotting along near town, and de-
terred a small mob preparing to jump a cattle stop.
One evening a white bull left his paddock and dined on kikuyu near the house. Then, in the
dead of night he surprised us by cruising past Tony’s dogs, up the drive, through the vegeta-
ble garden (agghhh….) and into the house paddock which has the most useless half-cocked
fence imaginable.
Don’t ask me why. Tony and Rex spend lots of time fencing, but never repair the fences
around our house or Rex’s parents’ house where seven bulls recently feasted on the lawn.
The bull that meandered through the garden has a future as a ballerina. He missed 12 let-
tuces and left 10 hoof prints in the broccoli patch where, amazingly, he exterminated only
one plant. He left 13 survivors and even missed teeny rainbow chard that are still blinking in
the daylight as they adapt to the idea they’re no longer seeds.
He camped placidly by the gate at the top of the hill until I let him into the neighbouring
paddock because I suspected he was plotting to return through the garden.
Rex was so unconcerned the garden was under threat I finally realised he wanted the bull to
eat the veggies. We can buy them at the supermarket any day, but cattle food is not so
readily available.
Then the yearling bulls, which usually spend winter going from one subdivided paddock-ette
to the next, started rambling all over the hillside. I mentioned this aberration to Rex who
said ruefully: “There’s no grass so I’ve given up that grazing system.”
Then more cattle arrive near the house and I’m sure my veggie garden is once again under
threat. I mutter so darkly about this Rex returns them to their paddock forthwith, muttering
even more darkly about the ringleader, a ‘Houdini’ Hereford who led another escape the next
night.
This time he sent them galloping to the far corner of their paddock and they haven’t been
back since.
So . . . he saved the lettuce and broccoli, which was great. And in case you’re wondering,
we didn’t need to save the world. The aliens in the movie got beaten by the good guys - as
they always do.

Book of the Year: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

This brilliantly-crafted tale about the friendship of two boys is set in Afghanistan before the
Taliban takeover and in the United States afterwards.
It’s a gripping story about betrayal, loyalty, family relationships and, thank goodness, re-
demption.
If you’re a weeper, have tissues on standby.
