1. The three major parts of the torque converter are the turbine, impeller, and stator.

 The stator is the reaction member of the torque converter

 The impeller is the driving member and rotates with the engine, and is located on the
transmission side of the converter
 The turbine is located on the engine side of the converter. The impeller vanes pick up
fluid in the converter housing and direct it toward the turbine

2. Difference between rotary flow and vortex flow.

 The fluid flowing around the guide ring is called vortex flow.
 The fluid flow around the converter is called rotary flow.

3. Purpose and function of torque converter:

 Automatic transmissions use a fluid clutch known as a torque converter to transfer

engine torque from the engine to the transmission.
 The torque converter operates through hydraulic force provided by automatic
transmission fluid, often simply called transmission oil.
 The torque converter changes or multiplies the twisting motion of the engine crankshaft
and directs it through the transmission.
 The torque converter automatically engages and disengages power from the engine to
the transmission in relation to engine rpm.
4. How much torque is a torque converter able to multiply

 The maximum amount of torque multiplication produced by a converter is highly

dependent on the size and geometry of the turbine and stator blades and is generated
only when the converter is at or near the stall phase of operation.
 Typical stall torque multiplication ratios range from 1.8:1 to 2.5:1 for most automotive
applications.
 There is a trade-off between maximum torque multiplication and efficiency—high stall
ratio converters tend to be relatively inefficient below the coupling speed, whereas low
stall ratio converters tend to provide less possible torque multiplication.

5. While stall testing is an effective way to reveal transmission problems, technicians should
exercise special precautions to guard against injury, both for themselves and others in the shop.
Proper steps include the following:

 Make sure that other employees know that you will be performing a stall test.
 Double-check the blocks you place in front of each wheel, to ensure that they are firmly
in place.
 Keep an eye open for persons approaching the area while you’re performing the test.
