IDU TASK SHEET

I & S and English

Goal: To communicate that changes in society are revealed in creative arts and literature.

Role: Experts such as writers, artists, sculptors, painters, graphic designers, dancers,
musicians, filmmakers (directors, actors, script writers) that have brought about change.

Audience: Invited audience to the Global Awards Ceremony (teachers and peers)

Situation: At the Global Awards Ceremony, all nominees showcase the social change they
have brought about through creative works they have created.

Product: You need to create an audio and visual presentation to portray your role and explain
the change that has been brought about. Your audio and visual presentation could be a dance
performance, a role play, a speech, a PPT, a TED talk, a song, a musical piece.

Give a rationale (written and spoken) for choosing the role and explain the change that has
been brought about. The rationale should include a) why you chose the role b) the change that
was brought about by that person c) how your performance reflects the change. d) Why you
chose the particular format of presentation.

Role: Christopher Marlowe


Change: Human beings at the center of the universe instead of God
Creative Piece: Dr. Faustus, the play
Product: A speech explaining how the changes in the society have been incorporated into the
play

Role: R. Balki (director of the movie Padman)


Change: Women empowerment and breaking of social taboos
Creative Piece: Made a movie that shows men and women discussing a taboo topic
Product: Documentary film explaining how the movie’s dialogues, characters and other
techniques break social taboo.

Role: Michelangelo
Change: Human beings at the center of the universe instead of God
Creative Piece: David
Product: PPT showing the changes in the society from God to Man through my portrayal of
David.

Role: Deborah Ellis


Change: Women in Afghanistan living as per the rules of the Taliban
Creative Piece: The Breadwinner (a novel)
Product: A TED talk explaining how Ellis has portrayed a young girl’s life in Afghanistan and
used descriptions as well as contrast to portray the change in people’s lives due to the Taliban
rule.

Timelines:

Final Presentation: 21-25 May 2018


Your script is due by (it will be checked for plagiarism. The script should include a
bibliography, and a rationale): 18th May?
Working on the summative: 14-18 May (you will be working in class for prep for the
summative in both English and I & S classes)
Your proposal will be approved by: 11th May
Your proposal is due by: 8th May
The task sheet and rubric will be introduced to you by: 3rd or 4th May
All learning activities and formatives will be completed by: 30th April

Proposal Guidelines:

1. Brainstorm and come up with 3-5 ideas of change that have happened any time period
in history.
2. Think about how one of these changes has been shown in society through literature and
creative arts.
3. Zero in on a piece of literature or creative art.
4. Write down the names of person/s whose work reflects the change.
5. Research the change (time period, problem, obstacles)
6. Research the creative piece (what is the relationship between the change and the
creative piece)
7. Research the person you want to portray.
8. Create a reflection journal to record the process of research and reflection for this
project. (Questions for reflection will be provided by teachers in English and I&S)
9. The journal will be graded, so make sure that it is up to date.

Presentation Outline:
1. Your presentation should include a rationale and your actual product.
2. Time guidelines:
Rationale -- 1 minute (Script: rationale + presentation)
Presentation -- 2-3 minutes
Feedback: 1 minute (padlet)
3. All the performances will be recorded.
4. Dress up as the character you have chosen.
5. Memorise the rationale for your product.
6. Prepare your product - a dance performance, a role play, a speech, a PPT, a TED talk, a
song, a musical piece.

1. To what extent does my proposed presentation show that “Changes in society drive
innovation and revolution in the creative arts and literature.”
2. To what extent will my presentation show an understanding of social changes, their
causes and consequences from the I & S discipline? To what extent will my presentation
use analytical terminology from the English discipline?
3. To what extent will I be able to portray the interconnections between the two disciplines
through this presentation? How will this presentation help show my knowledge of the
connection between the two disciplines?

After the presentation/at the end of the unit:


1. How far has the Statement of Inquiry been successfully understood by you during the unit.
2. How was I able to develop the essential 21st century skills of critical thinking, communication,
problem solving and collaboration through the interdisciplinary unit?
3. Am I satisfied with the end product that I have created? If i had the opportunity to rework on
my end product what changes would I make or not make? Justify your answer giving a
rationale.
4. Evaluate the pros and cons of the interdisciplinary unit? As a learner what changes would you
like to see in the unit to make it more effective and meaningful?
5. Do you think the disciplines that came together and the concept selected worked as an IDU?
Justify your answer.
6. What were the strategies, skills, and procedures I effectively used for this assignment?
7. What have I learned about my strengths and my areas in need of improvement? How am I
progressing as a learner?
