4 !' goes rightfully now with the name of c c, a self-groomed
agricultural and environmental activist of Bangladesh. Relentlessly working for nearly three decades, he
almost single-handedly revolutionized the media exposure of agriculture and farmers in the disaster-prone
country, Bangladesh. Mr. Seraj has established a synergy among the media and the men in the field, which
has an undeniable impact on policy makers, stakeholders across all the sections of the society and most of
all on the mentality of the poor peasants. He brought neglected farmer community and agriculture under
the concentration of the city-dwellers. Energetically, he engaged himself in the battle of the villagers
against the vagaries of nature and the unwitting indifferences of the society and the state machinery.
Media became his wielding weapon, technology and traditional knowledge was tuned into tools of success
and resilience of the brave farmers, became his inner inspiration to win against all odds. He is often
referred to as the ¶Field-Journalist· of Bangladesh.

Shykh Seraj, the Director & Head of News, Channel i (First-ever 24X7 Digital Satellite Television Channel in
Bangladesh) has been one of those proud sons of the soil who had led us to discover the art of survival. He
informs, teaches and inspires the ¶Haves· and ¶Have-nots· equally, to prosper by using properly the
bountiful natural resources that we are blessed with. ¶Son of the Soil· and the true ¶Media Activist·, Shykh
Seraj came up with his television documentary programme, $#! $"(
(Soil & Men) on BTV
(Bangladesh Television- The only terrestrial and state-run television channel in Bangladesh). It was during
the 80s (1982). Television media has always been regarded as the box of entertainment. Shykh used it as
the tool for development«the sustainable economy of Bangladesh was that he could foresee. He is
endlessly working for the concrete economy of the country. For his relentless contribution, he has been
awarded with many prestigious awards along with m

 (1992) and country·s most dignified

award, (1995).

His programmes ¶give voice· to farmers while bringing their problems to the attention of policy-makers
and government. Shykh Seraj introduced a live broadcast to enable farmers to join his programmes from
remote areas and is currently working to break the digital divide by setting up an e-agriculture initiative
to disseminate agricultural information to an ever wider audience.

In recognition of his important role in the fight against hunger, UN·s FAO has presented him the
prestigious accolade A.H. Boerma for the period of 2008-2009. He brought public attention on food
security and rural development.

Shykh Seraj, now armed with both the agricultural knowledge and the great skills as a Journalist and
Television Communicator, hopes he can unlock the way to far faster changes in the country's methods of
farming and utter socio-economic development through agriculture just to make the country ensured of
food security with many of his agricultural development-based agendas. Working now with four of his
agricultural documentary programmes on Channel I, Bangladesh Television and TV Southasia: !

(Soil & Men in Heart, Channel i), ! $#!$"(

Heart, Channel i), 5!

! (Agriculture: Round the Clock, Bangladesh Television) and Soil and
People in Heart (Agro-documentary in English language being telecast on TV Southasia, based in India).

The Son of the Soil«truly shines like the sun in the greeneries, rivers and arable lands. Bangladesh will be
a completely food-secured nation, even in this age of Climate Change- that·s how he plans his future
working agenda and hopes to accomplish his target.
