PRELIMINARY STUDY

I. INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The objectives of our feasibility study are the following:

• To choose an existing establishment or destination for feasibility study in


Tourism Planning.
• To evaluate the student’s awareness in travel and tourism industry.
• To understand the concept and relevance of a tourist destination to tourism
planning as well as the principles and policies that involves in different tourism
planning programs.
• To apply the concepts and elements of tourism planning and development
programs and it’s relationship to a sustainable tourism.
• To formulate/conceptualize and apply tourism planning programs and
development in a selected destinations.

B. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION, PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS,


TOPOGRAPHICAL FEATURES

Caloocan is divided into two areas. Southern Caloocan City lies directly north of
the City of Manila and is bounded by Malabon City and Valenzuela City to the north,
Navotas to the west and Quezon City to the east. Northern Caloocan City is the
northermost territory of Metro Manila and lies to the east of Valenzuela City, north of
Quezon City, and south of San Jose del Monte City in the province of Bulacan.

The city is politically subdivided into 188 barangays.

Caloocan City is located at 1.5 kilometers from the coast of Manila Bay, at the
northwestern part of Metro Manila. It is divided into two geographically non-contiguous
areas – North and South Caloocan.

3. HISTORY OF CALOOCAN CITY

Caloocan City – Home of Heroes

The people of Caloocan should be proud of their city. It had at one time or another,
romantic flings with history. Foremost among these episodes were the events that took
place in 1896, when organized armed resistance rose against the tyranny of the
Spanish masters in the Philippines. These caught the attention of the Filipino people
and the world as well. The name Caloocan has always been prominently written in the
pages of our history. Writers, poets, and even balladeers always mentioned the Cry of

Balintawak; the names of Andres bonifacio, Tandang Sora, Antonio Luna, Torres
Bugallon, Cecilio ,Apostol.

How Caloocan got its present name is a story by itself. According to opinions and even
beliefs, the name Caloocan originated from the Tagalog word “lo-ok” (bay) in view of its

proximity to Manila Bay being located in Dagat-Dagatan, a small lake separated by
Manila Bay and town of Navotas. Others believed that the word “lo-ok” meant “sulok” or
corner. In the past, Caloocan was actually located “at the corner” where the ends of the
old towns of Tondo and Tambobong (Malabon) meet.

The first name of Caloocan when it was still a small barrio of Tondo was Aromahan or
Espina as the Spaniards used to call it. The site of the barrio was located in a low place
called Libis, west of the center of the poblacion of Caloocan. It was then commonly
called Libis Espina.

In 1762 the spanish Augustinian priests reached the insular “lo-ok”, and eventually
established the first Catholic Church the barrio in 1765. However, the spiritual
administration of Caloocan was transferred to the Recollectos in 1814.

In 1802 Caloocan began to grow. When it was converted into a town in 1815, the
poblacion had to be moved from the western fringe to its present site.

F. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT CHARACTERISTICS

It is an administrative function that develop, implement and monitor the


environmental policy of an organization.
In Caloocan City they implement the clean and green program, wherein they
plant trees along edsa highway. Also they clean the canals on every barangay’s.

G. TOURISM ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES

Bonifacio Monument

The main landmark of the city, the Bonifacio Monument is located at the intersection
of Rizal Avenue & EDSA. The monument commemorates the most proletarian of all

Filipino heroes, Gat Andres Bonifacio. The monument was immortalized by a great
Filipino national artist for sculpture, Guillermo Tolentino.

Gubat sa Ciudad Resort

Judicial Complex
The Caloocan City Judicial Complex was inaugurated November 19, 2003 with Chief
Justice Hilario Davide as the Guest of Honor. It was constructed to house the Regional
Trial Court (RTC), Metropolitan Trial Court (MTC), Office of the Prosecutor and other
line Agencies.

San Roque Cathedral


A. Mabini, Caloocan City
The first Catholic Church in Caloocan City. On June 28, 2003, his holiness John Paul II
created the new Diocese of Caloocan, comprising Caloocan City-South, Malabon City &
the Municipality of Navotas & elevated this Parish Church to the level & dignity of a
Cathedral Church. The Holy Father appointed the most Rev. Deogracias S. Iniguez, Jr.
D.D. as the first Bishop of the New Diocese of Caloocan on August 22, 2003.

Horace Higgins Hall-Philippine National Railways


End corner of M. Hizon and C. Apostol St.
Former warehouse and site of first train trip held in November 22, 1892. It was
associated with important historical event and bear strong foreign architectural
influence.

Manila Central University


EDSA Monumento Circle, Caloocan City
The first co-educational institution in Caloocan City founded in 1904. It serves the dual
purpose of a university and a hospital.

Pajotan de Sto. Nino Festival
The name of the event is derived from "Maypajo," a shortcut of Pajotan, a local variety
of mango variety found in Caloocan City. This colorful procession/parade of different
Sto. Niños, together with thousand devotees dance their way to the tune of Ati-atihan
sound. Several miracles and favors granted are attributed by the faithful to the
miraculous image of Sto. Niño.

Pamaypay ng Caloocan Festival


This is one of the highlights of the city's Foundation Day, showcasing the use of
thepamaypay (a hand-held fan in English) as a traditional tool for cooling the heat . This
is exhibited in techno-modern folk street dancing competition. The pamaypay is
commonly used by Filipinas, something they got from the Spaniards probably. It is very
appropriate for the Philippines, especially during the dry seasons.

C. TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES

The Light Rail Transit (LRT-1) has a terminal at Monumento. The railway traverses
Rizal Avenue Extension of Caloocan City, into the City ofManila and Pasay City. The
whole stretch can be traveled in about 30 minutes.

The Philippine National Railways has a terminal at Samson Road. That serves 3

The Judicial Complex is another landmark that depicts Caloocan’s boldness. It was
built to host the Office of the Prosecutor, Metropolitan Trial Court and Regional Trial
Court. Its inauguration on November 19, 2003 was graced by Chief Justice of the
Philippines Hilario Davide. For some holy moments, you might want to swing by San
Roque Cathedral. Its importance is noteworthy in that the world’s most loved Holy
Pope John Paul II formed the new Diocese of Caloocan and advanced it to the prestige
of a Cathedral Church on June 28, 2003.

You might be nosy about where the first train trip was done in 1892. You can head to
Philippine National Railways where you will also spot the Horace Higgins Hall at the
end curve of C. Apostol and M. Hizon streets. The hall was linked to significant historical
happenings and powerful foreign architectural impact. Giving much pride to Caloocan
resident is its Tala Leprosarium that’s famed as the most aged leprosy hospital in Asia
established in 1940. Another remarkable landmark of Caloocan is the Manila Central
University, which is the first co-ed school in town founded in 1904. More city sights to

E. ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

The Caloocan City government’s best of the city trade exhibition and event dubbed
“Wow Caloocan,” initially attracted some 50 companies, small and medium enterprises
(SMEs) and other organizations that offered products manufactured locally.

According to City Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri, the main aim of the entire event is to
showcase the best of what Caloocan City has to offer in terms of products, services and
entertainment.

Echiverri said the Wow Caloocan trade expo also allowed buyers and retailers direct
access to Caloocan-made products and goods available in both wholesale and retail at
very affordable factory prices.

“Wow Caloocan did not only give due recognition to our local manufacturers, but also
provided livelihood and job opportunities to our residents,” the mayor emphasized.

The event, a project of the city’s Cultural Affairs and Tourism Office (CATO) and the
Office of Liga ng mga Barangay president Ricojudge “RJ” Echiverri, also featured SMEs
whose products included food, gifts and holiday décor, home furnishings, industrial
goods and services, organic, herbal and natural products, handicrafts and wearable
items.

Shoppers, meanwhile, particularly liked the idea of having livelihood demonstrations


and nightly entertainment shows which featured local talents.

For her part, tourism chief and overall trade expo coordinator Marilou San Buena
Ventura said there was an increased turnout of night shoppers because of the
entertaining and culturally-relevant shows.

Buena Ventura said one of the highlights of the event was the fashion show that
featured Bb. Caloocan winners and candidates dressed in “Filipino-inspired creations”
by the city’s top caliber fashion designers. Caloocan City is also renowned as the place

Environment

Eco-Life Foundation is dedicated to its mission of protecting the Philippine ecosystems


through its Rainforest Conservation Convergence (RCC) strategy -- an innovative
concept that ensures accountable, participatory, socially rewarding and financially-
viable rainforest conservation. This strategy has three (3) vital and interrelated
components, namely: 1) Treebank; 2) Eco-products and; 3) Eco-education. The
synergistic output and impact of this strategy is only possible if these three (3)
elements are present and are dialectically interrelated with one another.

Taking on a challenge of a size and magnitude as rainforest conservation requires a


wholistic and scientific approach. The Rainforest Conservation Convergence
(RCC) strategy underscores the need for creative interplay of treebanking, ecology-
friendly business enterprises and experiential people's education in order to succeed in
genuine rainforest conservation.

Using part of the proceeds from our Protect-A-Hectare Program and other ecology-
friendly business undertakings, our Foundation is committed to providing the annual
funding requirements of rainforest conservation in the Zambales Rainforest. The

Uplift (Urban Program for Livelihood Finance & Training) Philippines, Inc., formerly
known as Inter-Aid Neighborhood Business Association, was registered with the SEC
as a non-stock, non-profit organization on April 7, 1994. The organization started as a
project initiated by Inter-Aid, a French NGO as Neighborhood Business Association
(NBA) airmed to help poor families improve their living conditions through permanent
access to affordable productive loans, training, and capital build-up (CBU). At the same
time, Inter-Aid also initiated LINK, a program offering business training and support in
job hunting. These two (NBA and LINK) were merged at the end of 1988 under the
name Uplift, reflecting the holistic approach of the program. Uplift program was based

A Living For Christ Foundation, Inc. (ALFC) was duly registered with the Securities and
Exchange Commission as a non-stock, non-profit organization on May 18, 1994. It was
organized as a prayer group of Couples for Christ in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City
headed by Tsinoy couple Teofilo and Shirley Bangayan. The founding members were
composed of entrepreneurs and professionals who began extending financial and
organizational support to the barangay. The CFC started also giving seminars on value
formation, livelihood and skills training. Later, they built the ALFC in Bagong Silang,
complete with training and workshop areas, seminar rooms and a chapel for community
use. The center was envisioned to fully integrate the organization's community
development program. Now, ALFC is fully operational with its programs adopted from
Gawad Kalinga and is implementing GK Sagip, Siga, Sibol and Tatag programs.

D. TOWS ANALYSIS

THREATS:

Caloocan City doesn’t known as one of the rich cities in Metro Manila so that they
can’t compete to other near cities. Also there are no huge establishments that can prove
that Caloocan City can also be on of them.

OPPORTUNITIES:

Monumento Circle is the road that every place in its north, south, east and west
can pass through when they were going somewhere. By this, opportunities will come up

because the establishments that they have is very accessible. Their industry would
increase.

WEAKNESSES:

There are many informal settlers in Caloocan City that’s why the place becomes
congested and the spaces that they accommodate cannot use for the development of
the city. Also because of this there are many crimes that are happening during night
time especially on the places that is near them.

STRENGTH:

In this city there are many blue color jobs so that they can give works to the non-
degree holders. Also Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri manages the whole city very well
and because of that even if they are not one of the rich cities in metro manila, they can
stand on their own. Roads and infrastructures are good in their city not like in the near
city Malabon and Navotas.

nowadays since Starbucks Coffee has started, also Filipinos love’s coffee a lot. We also
consider it’s accessibility on each of the group members so that when we need some
information on the establishment, we can get there easily because Barreso Coffee Bar
is located only at the 2nd floor Bldg.A Caloocan City Commercial Complex A.Mabini St.
Caloocan City. Lastly, to attain the objectives of our feasibility study which are the
following:

of them work as the cashier, barista and waiter. But it is fine because the establishment
is not that big so that it is enough to have just two staffs. Even if they only have two
employees, they can manage it well.

A. MARKET DESCRIPTION

This establishment caters the students on the nearby schools and


universities in Caloocan City, also the employees of Caloocan City Hall and other locals.

B. DEMAND AND SUPPLY ANALYSIS

Demand pertains to the market. The Demand of their costumers to them is


to lessen the price of their products especially the beverages. In terms of the ambiance
of the place there is no question at all. They separate the place for the people who want
to drink coffee which is inside and the people who want to drink alcoholic beverages
which is located outside of the bar. As we observe, Barreso Coffee Bar doesn’t have
many customers all the time and we think that it is because of the high price of their
products. Many people cannot afford their prices.
In Supplies, they can give the product that the customer wants to buy. But
sometimes the product that is in their menu is unavailable. In terms of service, they can
manage it well because of having a small place. They can serve all of their customers
on time.

After conducting the management study we found out that Barreso Coffee
Bar has only two kinds of employees. One is the “Barista” who carefully select
and blend the coffees. The other one is the cashier who focused on the handling
of cash money. We also observed that employees are not given benefits by the
management and it doesn’t have any organizational structure because it’s not a
big establishment. There’s no complication to the policies implemented in the
establishment for the costumers but the policies regarding the distribution of work
is not organize and well planned.

B. PROPOSED MANAGEMENT STYLES AND PRACTICES

We would like to make a proposal regarding the distribution of work in the
establishment. The establishment should hire qualified workers assigned to the
(FNB) Food and Beverage to meet the satisfaction of the needs and wants of the
costumers. We also think that the management should add more spirit of
hospitality within their selves so that the customers and employees will feel
welcome and comfortable.

3. 1 Barrel of red Horse take 1 sizzling sisig for free.

Make sure to apply the spirit of hospitality in serving the costumers.

Advertise Barreso Coffee Bar using leaflets or tarpaulins in order to introduce the
establishment to the potential customers.

I. CONCLUSION

After the study we have conducted, we came up with a conclusion that Barreso
Coffee Bar has a pleasant ambiance for relaxation. They have a good presentation
when it comes in serving their foods and at the same time, it gives satisfaction to the
appetite of the customers. Though there are only two employees, they can still manage
to serve foods on time.

The establishment has few customers because their place is located in a not
easily seen area and in addition to that it doesn’t have any advertisements such as
tarpaulins and leaflets.

Just like other sole-proprietorship Barreso Coffee Bar still need an improvement
for the development and growth of their establishment.

II. ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION

The alternative action that we have come up for the said problems is that, they
should change the logo of their establishment because it brings confusion to the
people.

Regarding with their amenities and facilities, they may innovate and develop it
more so that their coffee shop can be more attractive to people

III. RECOMMENDATIONS

We recommend that the establishment should hire qualified workers


assigned to the (FNB) Food and Beverage to meet the satisfaction of the needs
and wants of the costumers. We also think that the management should add
more spirit of hospitality within their selves so that the customers and employees
will feel welcome and comfortable.
