Introduction

Jake: welcome to JMA News. I’m your host Evan Smith. Today we will be discussing the

devolution happening between Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom, why Venice is

sinking, and the land of the midnight sun.

We are here with Patrick Carey from Northern Ireland to discuss Ireland’s perspective on this

devolution

Jake: how are you today Patrick?

Jesse: doing great. And you?

Jake: very well thank you for asking. So, how is the government set up in Ireland?

Jesse: we have an Assembly called the Northern Ireland Assembly and it is made up of 108

elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

Jake: and what would you say the main problem is during this devolution?
2

Jesse: the problem is Northern Ireland cannot afford another failure to reach agreement on

contentious marches, flags, and the legacy of its violent past.

Jake: when did, this event take place and who does this devolution involve?

Jesse: 1998. It involves the United Kingdom and Ireland

Jake: what is the main argument that the Ireland people are fighting for

Jesse: the people of Northern Ireland want to leave the UK because of Economic reasons.

Jake: would you say Ireland was successful in breaking away?

Jesse: no because they can’t control their own government.

Jake: ok thank you for your time Patrick. We appreciate you coming

Next, we have Cole Wilson. Hi Cole. What would you say is the main problem in the devolution

between the UK and Northern Ireland?

Matt: devolution has transformed the UK. The process is designed to decentralize government

and give more powers to the 3 nations which, together with England, made up the UK.

Jake: why would you consider this a problem?

Matt: this is a problem because people are leaving the UK because of the economic problems

Jake: what is happening?

Matt: the devolution is transferring powers from the UK parliament in London to assemblies in

Cardiff and Belfast, and the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh

Jake: would you say that Ireland succeeded in breaking apart from the UK
3

Matt: no, because the republic of Ireland has its own government

Conclusion

Jake: so right now, you can see the UK and Ireland cannot come to an agreement and this

devolution event has failed because of economic problems. Thank you and until next time

America!
