What is the future of Colombian exports and what changes are generated
as a result of free trade agreements?
President Juan Manuel Santos said the devaluation "is a golden opportunity to
take advantage of the FTA and 1,500 million consumers available".
"If there is a union that must be excited about the future, is this. At this juncture,
the exporter guild becomes a key to see the future in a better light industry,
"said the head of state who reiterated that the Government has sought to keep
the economy on a virtuous circle.
Santos said that although the country did not profit markets in the past, the
current phenomenon of peso devaluation will help you do as happened among
the group of countries that make up the so-called "Asian Tigers".
"That's what we're going to have now, a rate at least competitive. We will no
longer have an overvalued exchange rate. And that will allow us to open some
windows and huge opportunities. This is a phenomenon that is here to stay,
"said the president in Barranquilla”.
The exchange rate of the dollar against the peso, favors exporters who earn
more income. Most international business is conducted in a predominant
currency like the dollar (a Colombian companies selling products abroad
[export], these products are paid in dollars, for example). Likewise, companies
that buy products abroad to bring the country must pay for these goods also in
dollars. So, what happens when the Colombian peso depreciates against the
dollar? For exporters, when switching to Colombian pesos money they received
in dollars, they will get more pesos for those dollars, increasing their profits.
Santos reiterated that Colombia has enormous potential starting labor and said
that last year was the nation's growth was in Latin America.
However, if it has generated a devaluation of the peso, which last year reached
16.6%, foreign sales do not react? One reason is that Colombian foreign sales
go mainly to the United States, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Mexico,
which have also been hit (except the US) by the oil crisis and raw materials.
This entity also intends in the future that the number of companies that exports
increase by 1,000 new constant push exporting firms and sectors that are
equivalent to 62% of non-mining-energy exports. For example, they include
plastics, containers and packaging, toiletries and pharmaceuticals, auto parts
and vehicles, metallurgy, clothing, confectionery and processed foods, specialty
coffees and beef.
The government's idea this year is to reach $ 20,995 million in exports of goods
and services other than hydrocarbons and minerals. Therefore, its necessary
take advantage of trade agreements, supply production chains to generate
higher value added and better export culture.
What are the changes that have been generated as a result of free trade
agreements?
These agreements have enabled the country's citizens to purchase goods and
services at lower prices and sell them in better condition. Also, they increase the
welfare of society through enjoy lower prices, better quality and greater variety
of goods and services in their own market
But besides these treaties serve to cheapen prices paid by consumers for
products that are not produced in the country.
Similarly they promote conditions for fair competition, also they provide
protection to intellectual property rights, they promote trilateral, regional and
multilateral cooperation, among other friendly countries and they establish
effective processes for stimulating domestic production.
The FTA Colombia- United States has favored the entry of Colombian
entrepreneurs to the world's largest market. It is the country that buys more
Colombian products, generating jobs and income for our country
