Introduction to design process – Types and Combination of loads - Codes of practices
Advantages and disadvantages of steel – Basic steel types – Structural shapes – Engineering
properties of steel. Design methods - allowable stress design and limit state design –advantages
and limitations- basic concepts of limit state design-
UNIT II CONNECTIONS 9
Types of bolts – black bolts- turned and fitted bolts- high strength friction grip bolts – Friction
grip bolts – types of bolted connections- modes of failures – effect of shear lag design of bolted
connections subjected to axial load- design for combined shear and tension. Welded connection -
Types, advantages and defects – strength of welded connection. Design of simple welded
connection – fillet and butt welded connection welded connection welded connection.
UNIT III TENSION MEMBERS 9
Types of Tension members – Behaviour of Tension member- Net sectional area- Analysis of
Tension members. Sectional efficiency - Design of Tension members - Splices in Tension
members.
UNIT IV COMPRESSION MEMBERS 9
Behaviour – Effective length – Use of bracing – Local buckling – Built up Compression
members – Battened columns - laced column – Torsional buckling – Lattice columns with four
angles at the corners of a rectangle.
UNIT V COLUMN BASE 9
Introduction- components of base- Types of base connections – Anchor rods or bolts – Design of
base plates – Design of lightly loaded base plate- Guested base –eccentrically loaded baseplate.
