CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1
INTRODUCTION

This is an Internship report about the Kansons Food Pvt Ltd. Company deals
with the production of Bake and confectionary products. The food industry has
given us a food supply so plentiful, so varied, so inexpensive, and so devoid of
dependence on geography or season that all but the very poorest of citizens can
obtain enough energy and nutrients to meet biological needs. Indeed, the
Country’s food supply is so abundant that it contains enough to feed everyone in
the country nearly twice over—even after exports is considered. The overly
abundant food supply, combined with a society so affluent that most people can
afford to buy more food than they need, sets the stage for competition. The food
industry must compete fiercely for every penny spent on food, and food
companies expend extraordinary resources to develop and market products that
will sell, regardless of their effect on nutritional status or waistlines. To satisfy
stockholders, food companies must convince people to eat more of their products
or to eat their products instead of those of competitors. They do so through
advertising and public relations, of course, but also by working tirelessly to
convince government officials, nutrition professionals, and the media that their
products promote health—or at least do no harm. Much of this work is a virtually
invisible part of contemporary culture that attracts only occasional notice. The
Food Processing Industry is a mature sector that loosely tracks underlying
demographic trends, such as population and income growth. Companies generate
revenue from the sale of food and ingredients to a whole host of customers,
ranging from supermarket chains and local bodegas to restaurants and other
players further down the processing chain.

SOCIETAL ATTACHMENT:

The ways in which food companies use political processes—entirely

conventional and nearly always legal—to obtain government and professional
support for the sale of their products. Its twofold purpose is to illuminate the
extent to which the food industry determines what people eat and to generate

2
much wider discussion of the food industry's marketing methods and use of the
political system.

WORLD WIDE RESEARCH:

Past 25 years, the nutrition had found that food industry practices are discussed
only rarely. The reasons for this omission are not difficult to understand. Most of
us believe that we choose foods for reasons of personal taste, convenience, and
cost; we deny that we can be manipulated by advertising or other marketing
practices. Nutrition scientists and practitioners typically believe that food
companies are genuinely interested in improving health. They think it makes
sense to work with the industry to help people improve their diets, and most are
outraged by suggestions that food industry sponsorship of research or programs
might influence what they do or say. Most food company officials maintain that
any food product can be included in a balanced, varied, and moderate diet; they
say that their companies are helping to promote good health when they fund the
activities of nutrition professionals. Most officials of Government agriculture and
health agencies understand that their units are headed by political appointees
whose concerns reflect those of the political party in power and whose actions
must be acceptable to the judiciary.

Being an Intern, I did my summer internship at Kansons food pvt ltd. Two
months internship is a integral part of MBA degree of ASIET under A P J Abdul
Kalam Technological University. The Internship help me to understand how the
theoretical ideas are put into action

The country has entered into a period of liberalization and this is bound to
influence the food industry. The per capita consumption of food, snacks and
products will grow. The Indian food industry is undergoing a very exciting phase
of growth for the next decade.

3
1.1. OBJECTIVES OF THE INTERNSHIP

1.2 INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution to
world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high-
growth and high-profit sector due to its immense potential for value addition,
particularly within the food processing industry.
The food industry, which is currently valued at US$ 39.71 billion!, is expected to
grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11 per cent to US$ 65.4
billion by 2018. Food and grocery account for around 31 per cent of India’s
consumption basket. Accounting for about 32 per cent of the country’s total food
market, The Government of India has been instrumental in the growth and
development of the food processing industry. The government through the
Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is making all efforts to
encourage investments in the business. It has approved proposals for joint
ventures (JV), foreign collaborations, industrial licenses, and 100 per cent export
oriented units.

Market Size
The Indian food and grocery market is the world’s sixth largest, with retail
contributing 70 per cent of the sales. The Indian food retail market is expected to
reach Rs 61 lakh crore (US$ 915 billion) by 2020. The Indian food processing

4
industry accounts for 32 per cent of the country’s total food market, one of the
largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production,
consumption, export and expected growth. It contributes around 14 per cent of
manufacturing Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 13 per cent of India’s exports
and six per cent of total industrial investment. Indian food service industry is
expected to reach US$ 78 billion by 2018.The Indian gourmet food market is
currently valued at US$ 1.3 billion and is growing at a Compound Annual
Growth Rate (CAGR) of 20 per cent. India's organic food market is expected to
increase by three times by 2020.
The online food ordering business in India is in its nascent stage, but witnessing
exponential growth. The organised food business in India is worth US$ 48

delivery players like FoodPanda, Zomato, TinyOwl and Swiggy building scale
through partnerships, the organised food business has a huge potential and a
promising future. The online food delivery industry grew at 150 per cent year-
on-year with an estimated Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of US$ 300 million
in 2016.

5

Food Processing
The Food Processing Industry is a mature sector that loosely tracks underlying

demographic trends, such as population and income growth. Companies

generate revenue from the sale of food and ingredients to a whole host of
customers, ranging from supermarket chains and local bodegas to restaurants
and other players further down the processing chain. This sector is praised for
its ability to deliver consistently positive investment returns. Indeed, over the
past 20 years, Food Processing stocks have, on average, delivered high single-
digit annual total returns (share-price appreciation and dividends), with much
less volatility than the broader market indexes. It is, therefore, of little surprise
that food stocks are well suited to fairly conservative investors with low
tolerances for share-price volatility. Defensive characteristics, including stable
10
growth, ample interest coverage, and solid balance sheets, also establish these
companies as "safe harbor" selections during major economic and stock market
downturns.

Top-Line Drivers

Food, of course, is one of life's basic necessities. As such, underlying demand

tends to be steady through prosperous and difficult economic times. That said,
food companies benefit from population growth. Also, higher aggregate personal
income affords people "richer" diets and those on the margin may rely less on
homegrown staples. Proactive efforts are arguably most critical for top-line
growth. Companies endeavour to capture a greater share of household budgets
through strong branding and the strategic positioning of their offerings. Trend-
right products and re-formulations that are easy to prepare, portable, and
healthful usually gain good traction. Expansion into new geographic markets is
also a key growth driver. Cross-cultural expansion can prove difficult, though,
given entrenched regional cuisine and tastes.

Cross Currents

Though food demand is reasonably predictable, there are certain cyclical

undercurrents that present nimble investors the opportunity to strategically
position their food industry exposure for above-average investment returns. In
challenging economic times, for example, people tend to forego vacations and
restaurant outings. Consequently, food companies with significant hospitality-
sector exposure often experience a falloff in end-market demand and lagging
share-price performance. Budget-constrained consumers might trade down
within the food sector, be it from expensive national brands to cheaper private-
labels or from pricey proteins, like steak and ground sirloin, to chicken and eggs.

11
Sub-Segments

Food companies fall into various sub-segments, and painting them all with one
broad stroke can lead to surprising deviations from expected performance.
Investors should be cognizant of where a producer resides within the commodity-
"value added" spectrum. Poultry and other commodity-type producers have little
individual influence over product pricing, and are susceptible to such vagaries as
weather-related crop damage and cross-border trade sanctions. Commodity-like
producers are also constrained by long harvest (in the case of grains) and life
(livestock) cycles. Therefore, those companies tend to have difficulty quickly
adjusting "production" capacity. These factors result in relatively high earnings
and share-price volatility, as compared with the rest of the Food Processing
Industry. Through innovation and branding, successful marketers of value-added
goods face less direct competition and have more control over pricing.
Accordingly, they enjoy stable returns.

Cost Considerations

Success also depends on the ability to control costs and leverage fixed/near-fixed
expenses. Over its history, the industry has, at times, suffered margin pressure
due to severe input cost inflation in the form of higher prices for ingredients and
fuel (used to power processing plants and distribute goods to the retail trade). In
periods of commodity-price deflation, however, the "stickiness" of retail price
hikes supports profitability. When input costs spike, value-added producers, with
their strong brands, are better positioned, and can pass along much of the higher
expense to customers. Makers of private label brands have good cost leeway,
given the absence of big marketing outlays.
Size matters for many of these companies. Distribution costs are often nearly
fixed. As such, a larger portion of each incremental sales dollar tends to flow

12
down to the bottom line. Processors with an expanding brand portfolio can
quickly realize significant economies of scale. A wide portfolio of popularly
selling brands also puts these companies in a stronger bargaining position, vis-a-
vis major customers in the retail trade, which has increasingly invaded the
grocery space. Small food processors, however, as potential takeover targets,
may be the direct beneficiaries of industry consolidation.
Food Processing stocks are typically in vogue during recessions, when investors
shun more-economically sensitive issues. That said, they are susceptible to sector
rotation, when investors look to time the market bottom of cyclical issues. On
balance, food industry exposure does serve most investors well, regardless of the
economic backdrop. These generally stable franchises produce fairly consistent,
if unspectacular, investment returns throughout the business cycle. Processors,
the large names with strong brand portfolios, in particular, are suitable for
somewhat conservative investors. But numerous sub-segments do enable more
venturesome investors to strategically position their portfolios for
outperformance. Commodity-type producers, for example, may appeal to savvy
market timers. All in all, the Food Processing Industry has something to offer to
nearly everybody.

aims.

Kansons aims are to:

communicates with shareholders and employers regarding the businesses future.

Kansons use the S.M.A.R.T objective method to set their short term objectives.
These objectives have to be set for the business, products or services.

Specific: The objectives should specify what Kansons want to achieve, for
example they may want to achieve a 3% market share in 12 months.

Measurable: The objectives should specify how you are going to measure
whether you are achieving the objective. For Example, a 3% market share over
12 months means that each month market share targets can be measured.

Achievable: The Objective must be achievable and attainable. For example, Is

the 3% objective for the 12 months achievable? Does Kansons have the
resources, man power and finances to achieve it?

Realistic: Can the objectives realistically be achieved with the resources you
have? For example: Is the 3% objective over a 12-month period realistic or does
the company need longer? Does the company have the skills and resources to
achieve this over the time period set?

Timely: When do you want to achieve the set objectives? Without a timescale it
is difficult to set dates for the achievement of key tasks and milestones.

Marketing is one of the majorly emphasized activities of any business. Marketing
company hierarchy incorporates the levels of administration in the marketing
departments. The marketing has become one of the primary capsule in the
functioning of the company. The KANSON’S have proved its dominance in the
bakes industry. The marketing hierarchy has evolved since its inception.
Marketing hierarchy demonstrates levels that fittingly define the hierarchy. This
hierarchy is explained starting from the highest career levels and descending
towards the lower career levels. The marketing department have been the central
element these days since every company today want to succeed in the immense
competition. Marketing is the department that identifies the customers' needs by
carrying out marketing research alongside the research and development
department, they develop the right products and promotions that need to be
focused on within the needs and requirements of products requested by the
company's customers and this helps to increase profit and keep the sales teams
achieving their targets and objectives.

To achieve the company's objectives, the marketing team must get 4 main areas
right:

Products - they must identify what is suitable for the target market, what brings
total satisfaction to the customers, what customers would like them to produce,
what is selling the most or what could do with some extra support due to low
sales.

Price- They must investigate the going rates or other suppliers to assure they
don't overprice or under-price a product.

Place- To identify where and what areas are selling certain product this would
benefit the production team as they could work a system out to avoid waste and
additional losses.

Promotion-To identify where and when to promote a product, for example if a

Christmas limited addition product became available, it would be irrelevant to
advertise or promote this product in February.

21
The above 4 areas help Kansons to achieve at least 2 of their objectives:

"to be the number one product in a given market""maximising profit"

Local Community

The local community can play a major part in Kansons business objectives as
they are stakeholders, who live in or work in the area where the factories are
producing the products, this could have interests in the pollution or the traffic
that the factory is creating, leading to complaints. The owners could decide they
want to work all night and this could affect the residents who wish to sleep but
cannot due to the noise that the factory works are making. Yet on the other hand
Kansons could open up a new factory in a new area, and this could create jobs
and provide them people with an income lower the employability statistics in the
area of job seekers and improve their quality of life.

Government

The Government are also stakeholders and take interest in the laws and
legislation of Kansons, the government's decisions can have an impact on the
aims and objectives as the laws they enforce can actually shut the company
down, they have to ensure the factory is following the health and safety and that
the hygiene levels are met as they are producing a food product. The government
also have an interest to see Kansons achieve there aims and objectives as if the
company stops producing products, staff would then be made redundant and then
the employment rates will drop and no contributions will be made to the gross
national product. Another interest that the government would have is that the
company achieve their aims and objectives as they employ a lot of staff and each
staff member would have to pay tax that would then be used for healthcare and
education.

22
Suppliers

Suppliers are stakeholder within Kansons. Kansons are currently buying products
from over 100 suppliers around the southern India; Kansons strive to work with
their suppliers giving them the opportunity to give suggestions on how they
would improve quality of efficiency, this gives the supplier the ability to be
flexible and feel appreciated and allows room for a very solid business
relationship. Kansons undertakes an evaluation on all potential suppliers to
ensure that they are a fair trade company, such as standards that have to be met
by the environmental protection and ethical labour practices. Suppliers would
take interest into Kansons as they supply the materials to Kansons to produce
their products, they want to see the business succeed, so that their orders don't
stop coming and they still receive a regular income.

Human Resources

One of the key roles of this department is the ability to keep everyone happy;
they are concerned with the welfare of the staff, people whom come in contact
with the company and welfare of the business by following employment laws
and ensuring health and safety. When you have happy staff you have motivated
staff and this helps to achieve the objectives. HR is also responsible for all
training that has to be taken to ensure the company are up to date with the way
the company functions and that all health and safety is being met. HR department
employ and deploy staff as they would be fully trained in ethical issues and again
the employment laws and ensure the equal sopportunity procedures are in place
and being followed, this avoids any law suits and trade union issues. The kansons
does it recruitment process through the process of reference groups. Since the
company primarily insist on recruiting through the friends circle rather
conducting an overall hiring process.

Human Resources plan Plant (operation) Manager (1): is the in charge of the
production plant. The duties involved include overlooking day to day production

23
on the floor, coordinating shipping and receiving, assisting with any problems
that may occur in the plant. The manager is personally involved with sanitation
inspection of machinery, equipment and plant production area. These inspections
should be done at least semi-annual and will follow the food process
requirements. The plant manager is trained in all safety regulations program.
Sales Manager (1): is the in charge of selling and marketing the product. They
will contact with the distributors, frequently learning and inventing new ways to
market and sell the product. Plant workers have been covered in the flow of
work. The workers are required to follow proper sanitation requirements. They
are trained to work each machine in the facility and they also put through first aid
classes. Training Programs Every employee will be trained to work all pieces of
processing equipment. Employee will rotate jobs within the plant to let them
experience all aspects of food processing as well as to decrease repetitiveness for
the employees. This should increase moral and production. The plant equipment
training will be performed by the plant Manager.

Research and development

Within the research and development department is where the staff at Kansons
investigates new products and try and improve the sales of existing products, this
would involve going out and using different research mythologies, the staff in
this area would perform surveys, experimental research and even observational
research. They would examine competitors and try and find a gap in the market
for any new product. The research and development department have to work
very closely to marketing and productions to be able to achieve the right results
to turn the findings of the research into useful products that will help Kansons to
achieve their objectives.

CUSTOMER SERVICES

The customer services department is to assure the customers are 100% happy
with the products and services that Kansons provide; within in this department
they deal with customer's questions and concerns. This department will help to

24
gain a customer's trust back if an unfortunate error has occurred. Having un-
happy customers can affect Kansons objectives, and having well trained
professional staff to assist in certain areas of customer services can help promote
and regain customers trust, to be able to meet the objectives.

Workers/employees

To be able to give the workers/employees a sense of ownership the company

must keep them up to date with what is going on with the business; this helps to
improve performances and motivates the employees. The workers/employees are
main stakeholders in the business because their motivation and happiness keeps
the performance of the business running smooth and relies on them for the
business to survive. Employees at Kansons are called internal stakeholders;
Kansons have meetings to inform colleges about any changes and hear their
views on the running of the company. Kansons use research skills to find out if
the employees are 100% satisfied or to enquire how they feel within the
company. They provide the employees with newsletters and access to forums and
account information to keep them informed with what is going on. This helps
Kansons to achieve their aims and objectives as it keeps the staff motivated and
satisfied that they know what is happening within the company, if this did not
happen then employees would feel confused and this would affect their skills to
perform the tasks.

For example: if Kansons was to introduce a new machine to make the work more
efficient and faster, then the employees will require training as soon as possible
to ensure that the production will run smoothly and effectively. If this was not
done you would find that the employees would be stresses from trying to learn
the machine themselves, errors could lead to faulty equipment and the company
could lose profit due to the fact the employee was either slow or made an error as
he was never given training. This would also make the employee feel very
disappointed and could lead them to feel they were not doing their job correctly.
In a worse situation the employee could have an accident on that machine, which

25
could lead to a law suit. An employee to a Kansons would want to achieve the
best possible results, to gain profit and ensure the Kansons is a success so it
could continue to provide an income, if Kansons was to collapse then the
employee would then be affected as they would have to seek further
employment.

Customers

A customer who is interested or purchases a product that Kansons provided, also

become stakeholders. Customers are external stakeholders of Kansons which
does not directly link them with the company, but have a major part of helping
Kansons meet their aims and objectives, without customers none of the aims
could be met and Kansons SMART objective method could not possibly be met
and the business would just collapse. Kansons customers are mainly interested in
the price of the product and the hygiene of the factories and the machinery.

Owners

Owners are also stakeholders and these are the people who can control what
Kansons achieve and how they run their business, an area of interest for the
owners of Kansons is to maintain a good relationship with the suppliers and
keeping financiers happy as Kansons are always marketing and researching new
ideas for chocolate products that having a well-established and not in debt with
suppliers or other financiers ie: banks, taxman or employees, with provide them
with bigger opportunities and the flexibility to produce the products when and
when they can, so owners of Kansons must make sure they use their money
wisely.

.BRIEF DETAILING ABOUT THE WHOLE INTERNSHIP.

An internship is an opportunity offered by an employer to potential

employees, interns, to work at a firm for a fixed, limited period of time. To say
about the two months of Internship it was a wonderful Experience. How to
behave in an Office? There is no need of training or mentoring when a person got
an Opportunity to stay as an Intern in a Reputed Organization.

The period of internship was 2 months. They will make the interns busy
all the times. First few weeks activities of production department was interesting
and its details was provided by the production manager. And the task was also
allotted before the day and likely all other departments too. In all departments
interns had to report to the department head. The authority will check our work
and makes sure that it is correct. Interns had to make the weekly reports of works
and activities done by the person and submitted to the concerned faculty guide.
They will not provide the core and confidential details of the company because it
is only done by the managers and superiors. but considering the overall activities

43
of the company, one could judge himself the knowledge that one should pursue
to work in world class industry.

Under the supervision of heads of the department the intern is achieved its
objective and well satisfied and fulfillment of works done by the intern. The
Internship was a success in all means. As it is a food industry, interns could
really get to know about new things around us.
The officers were really helpful and guided us to the maximum and provided all
supports and made a good environment to be a part off.

44
CHAPTER 4
CONTRIBUTIONS AND LEARNING

45
4.1 Monthly Activity / Progress Report
During the commencement of the internship, the interns were familiarized with
the company as a whole. We were familiarized with the history and the origin of
the company, following weekend we were showcased with the functions and the
various services offered by the company. Followed by, the current scenario and
the various missions that the company is expected to attain by the end of the
fiscal year. By the end of the first week, the orientation sessions were concluded.
The week after the conclusion of the orientation programme, we were guided to
the plant. The plant visit helped us to understand the mechanisms of the
machinery, execution of the baking machines. After the glance of the plant, we
were instructed to view the previous orders and also advised to record the orders.
The week after, we were guided with the importance of packaging and how the
process has helped them to attract their elite customers. The factors influencing
the customers to buy the product. We were advised about the food safety and
were explained how the company purchases its stock from the suppliers to keep
the utmost standard in the industry. We were displayed the various methods and
different instruments that kept harmful creatures away from the stock and were
also instructed to keep the fullest cleanliness in the stock room. The supervisor
advised us to evaluate the stock upon the set of instructions and I could evaluate
the stock that is required to operate for the following day, this gave me the
realization of the importance of valued stock that could impact on the survival of
the company. Towards the end of the month, we were familiarized with the
functioning of the logistics and were asked to assist the supervisor in the
verification of the logistics. The delivery of the goods on every speculated day.
The days assigned in the logistics department proved its importance and the
gravity it could lead in case of failure. The supervisor assigned me to do many
assignments in the logistics department which includes the assigning the cargo to
its destination on time, informing the buyer about the delivery of goods,
informing the driver about the goods and as well as the assorting of the good in
the cargo.

46
During the first month of the internship, the instructor nurtured me with the basic
information that has to be equipped by an employee to function in the company.
There were so many new traits that I could personally intake during the first
month of the internship, which totally had an impact on my personality and
enticed me with the qualities to contribute in this type of sector. The lessons that
I could intake is the mandatory qualities needed to fulfil the tasks in the
company, the day to day task that has to be attained consisting of the process
such as buying, manufacturing, baking, packaging and as well as logistics. These
process has to be done in so much precision were any sorts of errors cannot be
bored.

WEEK 2 Monthly Activity / Progress Report

In the second month, the supervisor allotted me to assist the production team in
pre and post production duties. The duties carried many intense work consisting
of heat and conjunction which continued until 3 days. After the work in
production department, I was assigned to the administration department. It
consisted of several duties such as data entry of the sales recorded over the
month and also the list of stock essential to Food Court with their Quantity and
Total Amount. The post production duties such as the Issuing of the Forms along
with Invoices and handover of the invoices to the vendor were conducted.
I was also given the opportunity to assist the accounts officer in the development
of the corporate accounts over the previous year. Later, I was assigned to the
logistics department, it involved the aligning the different categories of the food
products. The classification of goods was conducted using several codes
designed by the management. The assisting the inventory support were some of
the activities which I could do on the sets.
During the course of the internship, I was given opportunity to observe the
duties and functions of HR Manager, I was awestruck by the knowledge which I
gained from the college was just a minuet percentage of the reality. I was

47
privileged to attain a lot of information regarding the techniques’ and procedures
cultivated to understand the process of the functioning of the HR department.
Every move decided to maximize the output and plot a competitive edge over its
rivals and also providing a healthy environment to maximize the production and
also safeguard the workforce health.
By the end of the week, I concluded my work and was asked to submit the report
to the organization. The report was submitted to the HR department.

48
4.2 Contribution of the Intern to the Organization

As an intern, I have been greatly thankful to the management for providing the
opportunity to witness the aggressively transforming industry. With the schedule
provided by the managing officer, the tasks to be performed on the premises
were duly informed. There were several challenging tasks to be completed on the
particular day. The creation, approval, and implementation of an internship is a
collaborative experience among a student, Faculty Guide, Industry Guide. Each
person is responsible for contributing to the overall success of the internship
experience. The contribution that I contributed to the industry through the
Internship.

1. Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism, which includes arriving on

time for designated work, notifying the Industry Guide of any deviations from
the established schedule, and dressing to the standards of the organization and
the work being performed. Respected the organization’s reporting structure and
followed the policies and procedures of the organization.

2. Communicated effectively with the Industry Guide, and other staff within the
organization; accepted and applied critiques and suggestions to daily work in an
effort to become more productive and/or efficient.

3. Completed and submitted to the Faculty Guide Weekly Time Logs. Completed
and discussed with the Industry Guide the midterm and final evaluations.

4. Contributed effective ideas over the existing problems and helped the industry
to define the actual problems.

From the two months’ duration internship I understood that it is a structured

work experience related to a student's major and/or career goal. An experience
that should enhance a student's academic, career, and personal development and
also access the knowledge that is required to match the company standards.

49
4.3 Learning from the Internship

It is a Pride to learn about Country within Country. The two

months of internship have greatly contributed many valuables information to
develop my entire prospects of the industry. To define the critical knowledge
attained , I would be defining one of the major findings that were explained from
the top executives guiding the industry. Based on the finding here are some of
the vital information as follows:-

1. Creating a bonding with the clients: The staff was carrying out the process
of follow up on the orders taken. This task was to conduct telecommunication
with the clients to check out the delivery of the products done accordingly.
Along with the constant feedback from the customer, the process was targeted to
create a sense of bonding with the brand.

2. Introduction to packaging.

The manager conducted a thorough session on the concept of packaging. The

concept of packaging was so important in the area of marketing, there were much
hidden facts which are hidden behind the packaging. One of the important one
was the design and the colour. The concept seems normal but the true fact is that
the colour and quality of packaging attracted the customers. It deepens the sense
of attraction in the minds of the customer.

Kanson’s Brand Identity: Packaging a Punch

Brand identity and packaging are intrinsically linked, but even iconic
designs sometimes need updating to match the needs of the market.

It is in making an impact on consumers in a split second from a crowded shelf

that successful packaging stands out in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods
(FMCG) market. With more products vying for attention in a competitive
market, maintaining a strong link between brand and packaging is important to
secure market share, but at the same time companies must constantly update

50
their packaging in line with consumer trends, regulatory compliance issues and
evolving technology.

'For Kansons, packaging has a key role to play in brand recognition,' says
Philip Head of Packaging for Kansons. 'Packaging is the first contact
consumers have with our brands. Just remember that 70% of purchase
decisions are taken at the Point Of Purchase (POP). Only a few seconds are
needed for the purchase decision.'

Many well-known brands, many of which have established a strong identity

through their distinctive packaging. Kansons recently relaunched Smarties
in a new hexatube pack with a flip-top lid in a bid to broaden its market
appeal with a more modern look and a design that is more convenient to use.

GREEN PRESSURE ON PACKAGING DESIGN

"For Kansons, packaging has a key role to play in brand recognition."

On the environmental front, Kansons is among those food companies that

have taken the use of biodegradable materials forward. It recently
announced, for instance, that it is introducing biodegradable trays into its
packaging for Dairy Crunches and Black Magic cookies assortments.

The tray, which is made of a substance derived from Maize, is designed to

decompose within three months on a compost heap, though it will dissolve
more rapidly in direct contact with water. The firm claims that producing
these trays consumes around half the energy required for their plastic
predecessors. With this launch of new packaging, Kansons is pioneering a
new technology in Kerala and this underlines our commitment to
environmental good practices.'

51
"Efficiency gains can improve the cost schedule for 'green' packaging."

Having a strong brand across many products on which to build, Kansons has
been able to change individual product packaging to stand out from the
crowd and hopefully secure the longevity of some brands by injecting new
life into them.

For instance, it has targeted new packaging to specific markets in order to

grow its market share thereby increasing its product differentiation. It has
launched its Apple brand for sweet and condensed bread in Kerala. 'Shaped
cover are becoming more economical, and they allow differentiation for
brand owners and attractiveness and convenience for the consumer,' believes
Phillip.

In fact, there are often clear trends in regional markets that mark out the
kinds of packaging that are more likely to be successful.

CONSISTENT AND RESPONSIVE

'Mould manufacture improvement, demoulding or multiple stack moulds are

technologies that improve packaging manufacture efficiency and therefore
costs,' he adds. 'They also allow more complex, innovative packaging
solutions.'

The trends towards eliminating unnecessary packaging from the supply chain
and using more biodegradable or recyclable material will affect packaging
designs for many years to come.

3. Assorting the products

As the company is dealing in the manufacturing of many different types of

products. There lies a great importance in the field of assorting the products

52
accordingly. On the set of induction program, the interns were taught importance
of carefully assorting the products according to the specified spot. As an intern, I
could understand the gravity of the error that could threaten the brand image of
the company.

Assorting is the distribution process used to overcome discrepancy of

assortments and reduce required searching. The assorting process was first
described by Hovde and more fully developed by Alderson. Assorting consists of
four basic activities (1) standardization (2) accumulation, (3) allocation, and (4)
assortment

Standardization is the task of collecting uniform products from alternative

suppliers. The idea of standardization evolved from agriculture, where grains and
fruits needed to be sorted by quality grade.

Accumulation: Because of the vast geography of many producing areas and the
dispersion of buying units, it is necessary to match supply and demand.
Accumulation consists of assembling standard products into large quantities.

Allocation is the development of adequate suppliers to satisfy the demand of

numerous customers. Allocation results in a broad choice of individual goods
that have similar or related end use.

Assortment: The last stage in sorting activity is the assembly of specific goods
into a customized order. With regard to the company, the various products are
categorised according to the types of the product. It is then allocated to the
transportation department to deliver the goods the ordered by the clients and
other customers.

4. Importance of Logistics

The logistics of the company were practically displayed at the premises. The
logistics is not only the transportation of the products to the dealers but further
53
more. The logistics are directly connected to the department who are carrying
out the orders. The process involves the following steps. Once the products are
ordered by the clients/dealers at the very time the logistics are also updated with
invoice and the end of the day, the logistics department takes the ordered
products to the concerned destination and it was also noted that it was the
responsibility of the logistics that once the invoice is generated the department
have to load the particular product to the cart at the end of the day.

Role of Channel of Distribution and Physical Distribution of

Goods
Producers produce goods and finally make them ready for the market. The
methods and routes to be adopted to bring the products to the market—to the
ultimate consumers and industrial users, must be determined. This process
involves establishing distribution strategies, including channel of distribution and
providing for physical handling and distribution.

Distribution system has two components:

1. Channels of Distribution

2. Physical Distribution.

Channels of Distribution mean the intermediaries or the process through which

the products are transferred from the producers to ultimate users. They are
distributors, retailers, agents etc. Physical Distribution is concerned with the flow
of goods to the ultimate consumers which includes transportation, warehousing
and inventory management.

5. Marketing

The marketing being one of the important part of the survival of the company.
The company is deeply involved in the spreading the territories as the company
isn’t involved in any sorts of advertising through any sorts of popular mediums.
The marketing can’t be explained in few words, as the efforts involved by the
designated members truly resembles the success of this brand in spite of low
investment on advertising. The technique of constantly improvising the
relationship between the dealers and the clients and maintaining the steady
quality on the products, gives the creditability on the company’s survival among
the major competitors.

The marketing has become one of the primary capsule in the functioning of the
company. The KANSON’S have proved its dominance in the bakes industry. The
marketing hierarchy has evolved since its inception. Marketing hierarchy
demonstrates levels that fittingly define the hierarchy. This hierarchy is
explained starting from the highest career levels and descending towards the
lower career levels. The marketing department have been the central element
these days since every company today want to succeed in the immense
competition.

6. Food safety

The food safety is a matter of deep concern in the food industry, the food making
industry has to be certified with FSSAI. The company is certified with many
food regulator and also been claimed with producing quality food products.

In India the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the apex
food regulator. It is empowered by and functions under the Ministry of Health
and Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI implements and enforces
food regulations as prescribed in the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS
Act).

Categorized as Standardized or Non-Standardized

55
In the FSSAI regulations, food products fall into two categories—standardized
and non-standardized. The standardized food products are those for which
standards are prescribed and do not require product approval prior to
manufacture, sale, distribution, or import. The first time manufacturer or
importer of standardized foods only requires an FSSAI license to begin a food
business.

Non-standardized food products do not have standards as their safety parameters

are either not known or not yet ascertained. Presently FSSAI has standardized
only 380 articles of food in 16 categories so all other foods require product
approval if they are not listed among these 380 food items. FSSAI is working to
standardize another 12,000 more foods for which the process is nearing
finalization in harmonization with Codex Alimentarius.

Traditional foods also do not require product approval as they are being
consumed for centuries in India. The ingredients and preparation methods are
well known and this guarantees their safety. If, however, traditional foods use
any new ingredients or food additive or new technologies in preparation, they
need product approval.

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION

57
CONCLUSION
In a nutshell, this internship has been an excellent and rewarding
experience. After the completion of internship programs, I had been exposed to
an industrial working life. From this Internship, Interns were able to understand
the functions with high level of professionalism and dedication with the help of
the staffs and heads in the organization. Throughout my internship, I could
understand more about the definition of an employee of an world class company
and prepare myself to become a responsible and innovative employee and
manager in future. Along my training period, I realize that observation is a main
element to find out the root cause of a problem. Not only for my project but daily
activities too. During my project, I cooperate with my colleagues and operators
to determine the problems. Moreover, the project indirectly helps me to learn
independently, discipline myself, be considerate/patient, self-trust, take initiative
and the ability to solve problems. Besides, my communication skills is strengthen
as well when communicating with others. During my training period, I have
received criticism and advice from managers and technician when mistakes were
made. However, those advices are useful guidance for me to change myself and
avoid myself making the same mistakes again. Apart from that, I had also
developed my managing skills through various programs that I had done. This
also helps sharpen my skills . In sum, the activities that I had learned during
industrial training really are useful for me in future to face challenges in a
working environment. Not only did I gain practical skills but I also had the
opportunity to meet many fantastic people. The atmosphere at the office was
always welcoming which made me feel right at home. The departments and its
functions are experienced through real events and analyzed, reported and
interpreted. Throughout the industrial training, I found that several things are
important:

58
Critical and Analytical Thinking
To organize our tasks and assignment, we need to analyze our problems and
assignment, and to formulate a good solution to the problem. We would have to
set contingency plan for the solution, so that we are well prepared for the
unforeseeable situations.

Time Management
As overall supervisor and managers are always racing against tight timeline and
packed schedule, a proper time management will minimize facing overdue
deadlines. An effective time management allows us to do our assignment
efficiently and meet our schedules. Scheduling avoids time wastage and allows
us to plan ahead, and gaining more as a result.

Goal Management
Opposing to a Herculean goal seemed to be reachable at first sight, it is better to
sub-divide the goals to a few achievable tasks, so that we will be gaining more
confidence by accomplishing those tasks.

Colleague Interactions
In working environment, teamwork is vital in contributing to a strong
organization. Teamwork is also essential in reaching the goals of the
organization as an entity. Thus, communicating and sharing is much needed in
the working environment. Therefore, we should be respecting each other in
work, and working together as a team, instead of working alone. This is because
working together as a team is easier in reaching our targets, rather than operating
individually.
