SKITTLES PROJECT

PROJECT PART 5: Confidence Intervals Paola Vargas-Corbacho

Math 1040

1. Confidence Intervals are a range of values with a specified confidence that the parameter is
within that range. They are used in Statistics to estimate the parameter; the range of values
gives a margin of error, because we cannot be a 100 percent certain. Also, how confident you
like to be affects the error. For example, if you want to be 99 percent confident the range of
number will be larger than if you only want to be 95 percent confident.

2. Requirements for population proportion:

-Simple Random Sample

-np (1-p) higher/equal to 10
-n is lower/equal0.05N

Requirements for population mean:

-Simple Random Sample

-n is lower/equal to .05N
-population normal or n is higher /equal to 30
3.

4. We are 99% confident that the true proportion of yellow candies for all skittles is between .178
and.23

Based on my interval for the true proportion of yellow candies, the proportion of yellow candies in my
single bag is not a likely value for the population proportion since it is .148 (9/61=.148)
5.

6. We are 95% confident that the population mean of the number of candies per each bag is between
58.9 and 60.4

Based on my interval for the true mean number of candies per bag, the total number of candies in the
bag I purchased it is not a likely value because it is outside my interval.

The number of candies I had was 61 candies.
