Lesson 2: Advocacy Action Plan

Problem Statement:

The problem that I am trying to address is the lack of mental health training, awareness, and

supportive trainings on conflict strategies for teachers, parents, and caregivers in the Chandler

Unified School District.

Question:

How can we teach and demonstrate a teaching tool that provides accurate research-based

findings and experience driven practices that support social and emotional development and

conflict strategies of the young child to those who can have the greatest impact parents,

caregivers, and teachers?

Goals:

1. By the end of TEL 410, I will contact 3 Chandler Unified School District Teachers to

discuss mental health awareness in the young learner.

a) Research Mental Health awareness in CUSD.

b) Resources available to the Teachers through the District and alternative sources.

2. By the end of TEL 410, I will conduct an online survey about mental health development

of the young child of at least 30 parents of children in the Chandler Unified School

District.

a) Develop FAQs on Mental Health development of the young child.

b) Interview friends and family to spur alternative ideas on what it is, means, and

needs.

c) Develop the survey Q & A.

d) Design the survey.

e) Publish the survey to social media, invite friends, family, caregivers, teachers, in

the CUSD to complete it.

f) Analyze the report and evaluate the findings.

3. I will contact a representative from each of these advocacy agencies, Smart Support,

Quality First First Things First, and National Association for the Education of the Young

Child to discuss the mental health development of the young child.

a) Research what is mental health for each advocacy agency.

b) Develop Q & A for questioning.

c) Contact advocating agency for interview, set up appointment, and hold

interview.

d) Review interview notes, conduct follow up clarifying if needed, write up final

summary.

Our goal is that every parent, caregiver, or teacher has access to resources and training tools on

mental health in social and emotional development and conflict strategies.

Timeline:

1. 03/26/2018 – reach out to mentor from each Agency. (G3)

2. 03/27/2018 – publish mental health survey. (G2)

3. 03/28/2018 – reach out to 6 teachers in the CUSD about MHD(G1)

4. 03/30/2018 - follow up on the Agency Mentors (G3)

5. 04/03/2018 – extend the survey further into the CUSD social media, emails. (G2)

6. 04/6/2018 – follow up contact/responding 3 teachers from CUSD on MHD. (G1)

Budget/Resource Needs:

The budget will be minimal of twenty dollars ($20) as a resource fun. The major tools of this

project will be the internet, access to computer or laptop with appropriate software to develop

concepts and communicate with resources and advocacy agents. Also, we will need to use the

phone for phone conferences and interviews. We will need to have some computer skills in
training in collaborating with our peers and contacts. We will need to connect with those that are

creative thinkers and have the skills to problem solving and solution design skills.

Team Member/Organization:

In creating my team, I am working with an online specialist, advocacy agency representatives,

educators, and parents of young children in the Chandler Unified School District. The social

media resource is Mrs. Jennifer Maciaszek, she is a creative clever course designer that is willing

to help think through processes and a quality sounding board. The advocacy agencies each have

a representative that I have reached out to and have some feed back from. From Quality First

First Things First, Mrs. Patricia Christie will be meeting with me on March 28th, 2018. From

Smart Support, Mrs. Debra Foley a mental health specialist has confirmed through email that she

is willing to answer any questions that I have. From the NAEYC, Phoenix area representative

Margaret Arnold-Rowells is willing to help me in any way that she can.

The Chandler Unified School District educators include Mrs. Druck, an elementary school

principle and teacher for over ten years. Mr. Sean Cederstrom, teacher for sixteen years with a

Masters in Administration and a Masters in Multi-Culturalism. Mrs. Jill Raj, a teacher and

parent in the chandler Unified School District for fourteen years. Mrs. Stephanie Moore, a

Kindergarten teacher in the Chandler Unified School District for over ten years. Mrs. Collella a

second-grade teacher for over twenty-five years and retiring this May. The parents with

children in the Chandler Unified School District that I will be discussing this with and sending

the survey to will include Mrs. Michele Doty, Mrs. Rene Holbrook, Samantha Neilson, Elizabeth

Glenn, and Cassie Smith.
