Lab Exercise 1 - From Land to Mouth

Think about and predict: A field of corn contains a certain amount of food energy. If cattle eat the corn,
they will gain some of the food energy. How does the amount of energy in the corn compare with the
amount of energy in the cattle? Is it more efficient to feed on corn or beef? In this activity, you will
compare the energy content of some familiar human foods.

You will need: graph paper, calculator, and colored pencils/markers

What to do:
1. The table below lists the average amount of energy (in kilojoules per square meter of land per
year) in different organisms that people use for food.

a. Organize the data from LEAST energy to MOST energy. If there is a tie, you can rank
them the same number. (Do this under the “Ranking” column in the table above and b
below)
b. Rewrite them in order from least to greatest:

__________, __________, __________, __________, __________,
__________, cane sugar.
c. Write the organisms in order in the bottom boxes of the graph—starting from left to right
after the box that has “Fish” inside of it. There are other organisms filled in so you know
you are on the right track.
d. The scale for graph (or the amount that each bar goes up by) is 500. I have filled in the 0,
500, and 15,000 lines but you are to fill in the remaining amounts next to each line on the
left side of the graph (y-axis).
e. Use the completed parts of the graph for reference as you create each organism’s bar for
the bar graph. Put the energy amount for each organism above each bar, as illustrated
for fish, carrots, and corn.
f. Using the Legend at the top of the graph page, choose a color for producer and
consumer. Color the box next to the words with the colors you choose. Then, use that
color to fill in the bars that show the energy value for each of the producers with the
producer color and the consumers rectangles with the consumer color.

YOU WILL BE USING GRAPH PAPERS, THAT WILL NEED TO BE HANDED IN TO ME FOR
ASSESSMENT.

2. Calculate the AVERAGE energy of all the producers. (Add all of the numbers together and divide
by the amount of numbers you added.) SHOW ALL NUMBERS – YOU CAN USE CALCULATOR
[Ex: Average of 2, 3, and 4 is 2+3+4 = 9. 9 divided by 3= 3.]

3. Calculate the AVERAGE energy of all the consumers.

4. Which organisms (producers or consumers) can offer more energy (on average)?

5. Do you think it is more efficient for people to eat plant products or animal products? Why?
