Ferris State School of Education Lesson Plan Format

Name: Devon Huston Date: 4/5/18

Curriculum/Course: English 12 Grade level: 12th Grade

Materials: Computer recording, Paper, Writing
Time/Period: 1 Hour
Utensil, “Of Mice and Men” Book.
Standards: (RL. 11-12.1) – Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as
well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
(RL. 11-12.3) – Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama.

Outcome statement: By the end of this lesson I will have a clear understanding of the fourth chapter of “Of Mice
and Men.”
Objectives (I can statements): I can give you an accurate description of what happened during the fourth chapter of
“Of Mice and Men.” This includes character details, setting, events, etc.
Assessment (Formative, Summative): Formative: the students will have a short quiz over chapters 1-3 at the beginning of
class. Then the students will follow along with the fourth chapter of “Of Mice and Men.” Following the reading they will fill out
their character sheets and answer the chapter four comprehension questions. If they don’t finish in class then they are
homework and due tomorrow.

Introduction/Hook/Anticipatory Set/Activating Prior Knowledge: (Warm-up, review of previous day’s lesson, check for
understanding of previous knowledge, questions you will ask)
Our warm up will include a brief discussion of chapters two and three such as their opinions and any confusion they
may have. We will then listen to chapter four as a class. Following the reading they will fill out the character chart
and answer the chapter four comprehension questions. (Questions are attached at the end)

Steps in the lesson:

The first step in the lesson is to have a brief discussion of chapters two and three including their opinions thus far
and questions they may have. Then we will have a short quiz over chapters 1-3. Next we will get out our books and
follow along to chapter four. Following our reading they will fill out their character sheets. Next they will fill out the
chapter four comprehension questions. If they don’t finish in class then it is homework and due tomorrow.

Closure/Wrap up: This may be in the form of independent practice, a chance to share, or explicit restatement of the goals of the
lesson.
Working on the chapter four comprehension questions and character sheet.

Extension Activities:
Students may work on the interpretation questions to receive extra credit.
Assessment /Modification:
Specific Student/Group: For the reading of chapters one, the students will be read to aloud. For students who need
help with their questions, they can come to my desk and I will read the questions aloud to them.

Differentiation:

What will I differentiate? Few vs. Many Directions: on the quiz I plan to limit the number of questions for students
who need it. I plan to do a 10 question, 5-minute, multiple-choice quiz. This may be overwhelming for some
students, so I will have some only answer five questions because the quiz is timed. This will help them so they don’t
become overwhelmed and not even want to try.

How will I differentiate? I will differentiate for readiness.

Technology:

Computer & voice recording.
