8th Grade Intro to Industrial Tech

Unit Title: Power & Energy

Lesson Title: Part 2 – Electricity
Lesson Objective:
 Using a digital test on Canvas created by the instructor, students should be able
to demonstrate an understanding of the technical definition of electricity with 70%
accuracy.
 Using a digital test on Canvas created by the instructor, students should be able
to demonstrate an understanding and be able to use Ohm’s Law with 70%
accuracy.
 Using a square drive screwdriver, wire strippers, and a drill press, students will
create a simple circuit that includes a power source, switch, and load (light bulb).

Standards for Technological Literacy:

Standard 4: Students will develop and understanding of the cultural, social,
economic, and political effects of technology.
 Benchmark D.: The use of technology affects humans in various ways,
including their safety, comfort, choices, and attitudes about technology’s
development and use.
 Benchmark E.: Technology, by itself, is neither good nor bad, but decisions
about the use of products and systems can result in desirable or undesirable
consequences.

Standard 5: Students will develop an understanding of the effects of technology on

the environment.
 Benchmark D.: The management of waste produced by technological
systems is an important societal issue.
 Benchmark F.: Decisions to develop and use technologies often put
environmental and economic concerns in direct competition with one another.

Standard 16: Students will develop an understanding of and be able to select and
use energy and power technologies.
 Benchmark E.: Energy is the capacity to do work.
 Benchmark F.: Energy can be used to do work, using many processes.
 Benchmark G.: Power is the rate at which energy is converted from one form
to another or transferred from one place to another, or the rate at which work
is done.
 Benchmark H.: Power systems are used to drive and provide propulsion to
other technological products and systems.
 Benchmark I.: Much of the energy used in our environment is not used
efficiently.

Anticipatory Set:
 Show students the simple circuit project they will complete at the end of the unit

Advanced Organizer:
 Ask students, “Can somebody give a technical definition of electricity?” Give
students opportunity to answer, listen for something like “flow of electrons.” Tell
students, “Let’s think back to science. What is the basic unit that everything is
made of?” Students should answer, “Atoms.” Then ask, “What are the parts of
an atom?” Students should answer, “Protons, neutrons, electrons.” Tell
students, “The definition of electricity is the movement of electrons between
atoms. That’s how we get the term electricity. So remember electricity as
electron flow.”

b. Direct Current (DC) – Electron flow in one direction
c. Alternating Current (AC) – Constant direction change

VII. Electricity Terms:

a. Voltage – Pushes electricity through circuit (Volts)
b. Amperage – Strength of electrical current (Amps)
c. Resistance – Opposes or slows electrical current (Ohms)

VIII. Ohm’s Law

a. Determines voltage, amperage, or resistance of a circuit
i. V=IxR
ii. I=V/R
iii. R=V/R

IX. Ohm’s Law Examples:

a. 6 Ohms, 2 Amps, Find Voltage:
b. 18 Volts, 3 Ohms, Find Amperage:
