Creative Kids Co-Op

Kathleen Gibson
This practicum experience was held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The students in the Co-Op are primarily caucasian and home-schooled, in grades sixth through
eighth. Every Friday for four weeks our group would visit the Co-Op and teach these students how
to play the ukulele. We began with basic chords and sight-singing, then building up to writing our
own chord progressions and song lyrics. Overall, this experience helped me grow as a teacher
and provided the students with the tools to continue learning the ukulele on their own.

Handout
One product we took advantage of was the whiteboard in the classroom.
Every day we would write out out lesson plan to show the students what our
plan was. This helped us stay in check with our goals for each lesson. We
created handouts, including a blank ukulele chord sheet for the students to
update as they learned different chords and song charts that allow the
students to match up each chord with the correct song lyrics. By using these
multiple formats we were able to allow the students to deepen their
understanding of the information. QR Code for

Plan #1
Every Monday night the five of us would meet to discuss our plan for the
week. This would include creating a new collaborative lesson plan document
and talking through our personal ideas before solidifying our final lesson plan.
We would split up the main teachers for each week so every individual had
the chance to lead part of the lesson and gain experience. By splitting up the
lessons each person was able to focus on what they were doing that week
and revising it based on the feedback from the non-main teachers. This
helped me see each lesson plan with a new perspective.
