Brandon Hood-Farley Boys High School Varsity Basketball January 20th

Practice #35 Conference 3-4:30 pm

Practice objective: implement 1-3-1 defense and understand basic rotations.

Equipment: 15 reversible jerseys, and 15 basketballs

3:00-3:05pm 5 minutes 3 man weave:

Players will form 3 separate lines and pass each other the ball without dribbling and will go behind the
teammate they passed to in a weave like set up. They will do this all the way to the other end of the
court where they will make the layup and come back the other direction then go to the end of the line.

Cues: Lead your teammates, snap your thumbs down

3:05-3:15pm 10 minutes Stretching:

Athletes will spread out along the baseline and do dynamic stretches such as high knees, butt kickers,
grass pickers, high kicks, shuffles, hip opening stretches, etc. down and back from the baseline to the
volleyball line. The athletes will also get to decide many stretches that the team will do if they have any
ideas.
3:15-3:25 pm 10 minutes Shell drill

Players will get set up with 4 offensive players outside the 3 point line and there will be 4 defensive
players inside the 3 point line defending the 4 offensive players. On the pass the defense will jump to
the ball. The defensive players will also keep both the ball and their man in their sights. The goal of the
drill is to make sure that the defense is talking and jumping to the right positions when the ball is in the
air.

Cues: Ball, me, man, Jump to the pass

3:25-3:40 15 minutes Introduce 1-3-1 defense

Players will learn how to run a 1-3-1 zone defense. The athletes will be taught when and where to rotate
to based on passes. With this being the first time the defense is being taught, athletes are expected to
ask questions and learn this on the fly.
3:40-3:50 10 minutes Champion

Description: Champion is a drill where the team will be split into two equal teams that will be playing
against each other. There will have to be a rotation that makes sense to each team to always have two
players on defense and to always have an outlet. This drill will be a continuous 3 on 2 drill where the
defense must get a rebound and pass to their outlet who will be on the right wing. The offense will be
allotted a total of three passes in order to score the ball. The only way to score points in this drill is to
score the ball on offense. The team who loses this game will have to run 2 down and backs.

3:50-4:00pm 10 minutes 1-5 Post Passing

The player underneath the basket begins with a ball and tosses if off the backboard, simulating a
rebound. They then pass to the point guard on the wing and sprints forward, while the player on the
wing dribbles with quick feet through the cones. Once the player dribbling has reach the end of the
cones, they will then pass to the player on the run for a lay up.
4:00-4:15 15 minutes 3 on 2 fast break

Players will be acting as if they are on a fast break in a 3 on 2 situation where they are allowed 3 passes
in order to score and if they can’t score with 3 passes then their time on offense is done because in an
actual game the defense should be back by that time. The two who don’t shoot the ball will stay on
defense.

Cues: make the defenders make a decision

4:15-4:25 10 minutes Scrimmage

Players will play a 10 minute game where they only play a 2-3 defense and the offense will try to score
every time and the team who scores the most will win the game.
4:25-4:30 Cool down

Players will circle up around the center circle and do static stretching with group counting. During this
time we will go over practice and see what the athletes enjoyed and what they feel we can do to make
practice more productive and enjoyable.
