2-Contextual meaning: like, Pure man, Pure gold, Pure air & pure water
Suprasegmental features are those articulatory features which are superimposed over
more than one segment (i.e., vowel or consonant); they include stress and intonation.
Stress is the degree of force or loudness with which syllables are spoken in English. Every
word in English is made up of one or more syllables.
syllable is perceived as longer, louder, and of higher pitch. The term stress is sometimes used
interchangeably with accent, but accent should not be confused here with the other use of the
term to refer to dialect features (as in “a British accent”). نبرة الصوت \ اللهجة
There are four different degrees of loudness. The two loudest stresses are called primary stress
and secondary stress. These are major stress. The two weaker stresses are called tertiary stress
and weak stress. These are minor stresses. we shall use marks above the syllables to indicate
different stresses, as follows:
Primary stress = secondary stress= tertiary stress= weak stress=
Intonation is The rise and fall of the voice. Intonation can make a difference in meaning. For
example, if you say (He's coming.) with a falling voice at the end, you are making a statement.
If you say it (He's coming?) with a rising voice, you are making a question. نغمة الصوت \ الغنة
