Muhammad Ainun Nadjib or commonly known as Emha
Ainun Nadjib or Cak Nun (born in Jombang, East Java,
May 27, 1953, age 64) is an Indonesian intellectual who
carries an Islamic breath. In the lead up to Soeharto's
downfall, Cak Nun was one of the figures who were
invited to Merdeka Palace to be asked for his advice
which was then adopted by Soeharto as "Ora dadi
president ora patheken". Emha is also known as an artist,
a humanist, a poet, and a thinker who transmits his ideas
through his books.
Emha is the fourth of 15 children. Formal education only
ends in semester 1 Faculty of Economics, University of
Gadjah Mada (UGM). Previously he was 'expelled' from
Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor after doing a 'demo'
against the leadership of the cottage due to poor cottage
system, in the middle of his third year of study. Then he
moved to Yogyakarta and graduated from SMA
Muhammadiyah I. His current wife, Novia Kolopaking,
is known as a movie artist, stage, and singer. Sabrang
Mowo Damar Panuluh is one of her sons who are now
incorporated in the band Letto.
The five years he lived in Malioboro, Yogyakarta
between 1970-1975, studied literature to the teacher he
admired, Umbu Landu Paranggi, a mysterious mystery
whose life affected Emha's journey. At that time, the
creative process was also shared with Ebiet G Ade
(singer), Eko Tunas (cerpenis / poet), and EH.
Kartanegara (the author).
He also attended theater workshops in the Philippines
(1980), International Writing Program at the University
of Iowa, USA (1984), International Poet Festival in
Rotterdam, The Netherlands (1984) and Horizonte III
Festival in West Berlin, Germany (1985). Emha has also
been involved in the production of Rayya film, Light on
Light (2011), a movie script written with Viva Westi.
