Performance Task # 1- In Detail

Priority Standard: W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose
informative/explanatory text in which they name what they are writing about and supply some
information about the topic.

Supporting Standard: SL.K.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide
additional detail.

Big Idea: When reading informative/explanatory text, I look for the main topic and key details to support
the main topic; I ask and answer questions using clues in the text to help me figure out unknown words.

When writing informative/explanatory text, I share factual information I have learned with others by
writing about the main topic and using key details to support the main topic.

Engaging Scenario:
The kindergarten classes in our school will be holding a science fair where we will teach each
other about a science topic. To do this, we will work with a partner to research an informational
topic and teach our peers about it in a science fair exhibit where other kindergarten classes will
come view the exhibits created.

Performance Task 1 Synopsis:


For this performance task, students will take on the role of a researcher in order to choose a topic, name
what they are writing about, and supply information about the topic to create the science fair exhibit.

Suggestions for Instruction:
Focus Lesson #1:
• Review how to choose a topic.
• Have a small selection of texts available and model how to choose a topic.
• Pair students to choose a text that relates to their chosen topic.

Focus Lesson #2:


• Review the main topic and key detail graphic organizer. (taught in unit 2)
• Using the topic chosen during focus lesson #1, model how to complete the graphic organizer.
• In partners, students use their chosen topic/text to complete their graphic organizers using a
combination of words and pictures.

Focus lesson #3:

• Provide as many lessons and examples as needed to teach students how to use their gathered

• information to create a science fair exhibit.
• In partners, students will compile their information to create a science fair exhibit, such as a
poster, a booklet, iMovie, PowerPoint, etc.

• Students will present their final projects, on their chosen topics, in a science fair format.

other classes, parents, staff etc.
