It's used to show interest in the person or thing that is object of an action,
instead of the person or thing that do the action
Se utiliza para mostrar interés en la persona o cosa que es objeto de una acción, en
lugar de la persona o cosa que hace la acción.
The passive voice is used frequently. (we interest the passive voice, not who
used it)
La voz pasiva se utiliza con frecuencia. (nos interesa la voz pasiva, no quién la usa.)
The house was built in 1654. (we interest the house, not who built it)
La casa fue construida en 1654. (nos interesa la casa, no quién la construyó.)
The road is being repaired. (we interest the road, not who is repairing it)
La carretera está en reparación. (nos interesa la carretera, no quién la está
arreglando.)
Uses
- We use the passive voice when we don't know who do the action. Examples
- Usamos la voz pasiva cuando no sabemos quién realizo la acción. Ejemplos
A civilian has been killed. (Un civil ha sido asesinado.)
The car was stolen. (El coche fue robado.)
- Also be used to keep a same subject in other phrases. Example
- También se utiliza para mantener un mismo sujeto en otras frases. Ejemplo
I met that woman. I was surprised at how attractive she was.
Me encontré con esa mujer. Me quedé sorprendido de lo hermosa que era.
In this example the person remains herself as subject
En este ejemplo la persona se mantiene ella misma como sujeto.
- Other case that we can use passive voice, is to describe any scientific process.
Example
- Otro caso que puede utilizar la voz pasiva, es para describir cualquier proceso
científico. Ejemplo
The water is boiled to a temperature between 60° to 80° C.
El agua es hervida a una temperatura de entre 60 a 80 grados.

In english, the passive voice is composed for two element
En Inglés, la voz pasiva se compone de dos elementos:
The appropriate form of the verb "to be" + the verb in past participle
La forma apropiada del verbo "to be" + el verbo en participio pasado

1. Locate the direct complement of the active voice, it will be the passive subject
2. Verb: "to be" (in the time of the active) + Vpp of the active
3. If we wish, we can convert the active subject, in agent complement, putting "BY"
1. Localizamos el Complemento directo de la activa. Éste será el Sujeto Pasivo
2. Verbo: To Be (en el tiempo de la activa) + Participio Pasado Verbo de la Activa
3. Si lo deseamos, podemos convertir el Sujeto Activo en Complemento Agente,
anteponiéndole BY.
To change the active voice to passive voice, we consider the next points:
Para cambiar la voz activa a la voz pasiva, tenemos en cuenta los siguientes puntos:
• The principal verb is replaced for the auxiliary "to be", in the same time, next to the
principal verb in participle.
• The subject of the principal sentence becomes agent complement of the passive.
• If we mention in the sentence the subject that performs the action (agent subject),
this will introduced by the preposition "BY"
