Dear Rockingham County High School Advisory Board:

I have decided to do my Capstone Experience on childhood cancer, a disease that

dramatically changes the lives of young people and their families. I chose this topic
because cancer has affected my immediate family over the past year and I sympathize
with others, especially children, who have to deal with this disease. My goal is to raise
awareness and to instill strength, faith, and optimism into the people whose lives
childhood cancer touches.

In my paper, I will state and prove the newest discoveries and innovations in the
research of childhood cancer. I will talk about the impact that it has on people of all
ages, not just children in this case. I will provide facts on symptoms, long and short term
effects, genetics relating to this disease, statistics, medications, and prevention. In order
to strengthen and maintain direct focus in my essay, I will continually be answering the
question, “How does this support and relate to childhood cancer?”

I plan to get first graders from Wentworth Elementary School and second graders from
Bethany Elementary School to make cards for children diagnosed with childhood
cancer, alongside Payton Blaney. This will be a challenge because I will have to explain
to the kids what all childhood cancer entails, why it is important that we send them these
kind messages, while simultaneously helping and guiding them to create the actual
cards. Then after all of that, Payton and I will have to mail the cards to a hospital that
will gladly accept them. I plan to get the teacher of the first grade class at Wentworth
Elementary School, Mrs. Mary Barnes, to be my expert. I want to work with Mrs. Mary
Barnes because I have been interning in her classroom for my entire senior year, and I
feel like she can give me great advice and insight in the creation of my product.

I am aware of the definition of plagiarism and why it is important to avoid it. Plagiarism is
an act of an unperceptive and lazy person. Being ethical means being independent,
insightful, able to think for oneself, which inevitably leads to good writing as well.
