Exercise Set - I

For the questions posed in Rn , it is enough to consider n = 2 and n = 3.

1. Let T : Rn → Rn , be a linear transformation. Prove or disprove the following:
i) T is invertible if and only if KerT = {0}.
ii) T is invertible if and only if the range of T contains an open set of Rn .
iii) T is invertible if and only if KerT is a bounded set in Rn .

2. Classify all subspaces of R3 geometrically.

3. Suppose there there exist two distinct nonzero points x, y lies in the range of a linear
transformation such that the area of the triangle formed by these two points and the origin
has nonzero area. Is T : R2 → R2 . Is T invertible?
4. Prove that the sum of the lengths of two sides of a triangle in R2 is great than or equal
to the length of the third side.
5. (True or False: Justify your answer)
i) Any inner-product preserving transformation on R2 is linear.
ii) Let u, v ∈ R2 be two vectors orthogonal to each other. Then
||u + v||2 = ||u||2 + ||v||2 .
iii) Two vectors u, v ∈ R2 are orthogonal to each other if and only if
||u − v||2 = ||u||2 + ||v||2 .
iv) For two vectors u, v ∈ R2
||u|| = ||v|| ⇐⇒ u − v ⊥ u + v.

vi) Image of a parabola under any distance preserving map of R2 is a parabola.
vii) Image of a circle under any distance preserving map of R2 is a circle.
