Course Description:
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes. Learning chemistry is
similar to math in that it is a building process. Each learned concept is continually re-used
in later topics. So it is important that you keep up and understand each new concept.

Fall Semester: Spring Semester:

Matter Moles/ Chemical reactions
Atomic Structure Stoichiometry
Nuclear Chemistry States of Matter
Electrons and waves Solutions
The Periodic Table Acids and Bases
Ionic and Covalent bonding Thermochemistry
Gas Laws
Expectations:
 Come to class prepared (bring all materials, your completed assignments,
and be ready to learn).
 Avoid any action/behavior that could interfere with learning.
 Follow the “P’s of Success” (prepared, polite, positive, prompt, present,
participate, patient)
 Don’t forget to refer back to your class plan for any other questions.

(Failure to meet these expectations and failure to turn in assignments will

result in parent contact and/or administration contact.)

Policies:
Grades
Your six weeks grade will be determined as follows:
Daily Grades 20%
Minor Grades 30%
Major Grades 50%
Labs may fall into any of the three above categories, depending on the level of difficulty
and how much time is involved. Students will always be informed ahead of time which
grading category the lab will fall into.

Late Work
 No late work is accepted for Daily Grades
 Major and minor assessments may be turned in no more than one day following
the due date for a 30% deduction. (If an assignment is due on an A day, it is
due the following B day!)

Website: Moodle
Moodle will be consistently used for this class! It is the student’s responsibility to check
Moodle every night for assignments or make-up work when absent. If computer access is
not available for you, please see me for directions on when and how to complete online
tasks.

Supplies
You will need a scientific calculator (does not have to be graphing), an organized 3-ring
binder, pencil, notebook paper and red pen.

Textbook
A class set of textbooks will be available at school. On-line access of the textbook will be
available at my.hrw.com to complete homework assignments.

Makeup Work
Make-up work is work that a student has missed due to an absence whether excused or
unexcused. The student has one additional class for each day missed to turn in work
assigned while the student was absent. Continuous absences extending beyond a week
will be dealt with on a case by case basis. It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to
check Moodle for absent work or to pick up missing work from the teacher!
Tests, quizzes, and certain labs must be made up before or after school, not during class
time. When you are absent you are expected to make-up your test promptly upon your
return to campus. Make sure you come see me the first day you are back on campus to
schedule any make-ups.

If you know you will be absent because of a school event, you must see me and get
your assignments before the day you will be missing class. Those assignments (quiz,
test, homework, etc) will be due or taken the day you return to class.

Retesting
Students may make up a grade of 84 or below on tests (major grade) to a maximum grade
of 85. Students that score an 85 or above will not have a retest.

Tutorials
Tutorials for Chemistry will be held in Room C202.
