Thematic Essay

The united states presidents often make important decisions regarding foreign policy, These foreign

policy are made in order to deal with international problems. Foreign policies affect both the united

states and the other countries or regions.

I have selected two presidential foreign policies: President George W. bush sending troops to iraq

(2003), and the invasion of The bay of pigs (JFK, 1961).

In the following i will: Discuss the historical circumstances that led to the events, Discuss the the

impact of the event on the United States and i will discuss the impact of the event on the country or

region the event took place.

During the cold war tensions between the United States and the soviet union were high, every country

wanted to protect itself from the enemy. The spread of communism was feared, so the United States

came up with a Policy known as the continent.continent was a policy to stop the spread of communism

to other countries and we can see it in action when the us helps south korea against communist china

north korea and the soviet union. During the cold war the relations between the USSR and cuba got

better and cuba became an ally of the USSR, president JFK worried that cuba will become communist

so he ordered to train a group of cuban rebels in order to help them overthrow the communist

government led by fidel castro.

In april 17th 1961 the rebels trained by the US government landed in the bay of pigs in cuba with tone

goal to overthrow fidel castro, It took 3 days and in april 20th 1961 the rebels were defeated by the

cuban army and the invasion was a huge failure. The failed invasion was a huge embarrassment to the

US, a few days later jfk held a press conference in which he said "A victory has a 100 fathers and

defeat is an orphan" later in the conference he took responsibility for the failed invasion. The failed

invasion caused the US to be threatened by its neighbour.

On the other side Cuba became more communist and in 1962 the cuban missile crisis was one direct

effect of the bay of pigs.

In March 20th 2003 the coalition forces led by the united states invaded iraq in an attempt to disarm

iraq of weapons of mass distraction to end saddam hussein's support for terrorism and free iraq. This

was a part of president Bush foreign policy that was announced shortly after the 9/11 terror attack and

was called the “The war on terror”. The invasion took a month and a week and was over by May 1st

2003, after the invasion the us armed forces occupied iraq until december 19th 2011. During the

invasion the iraqi president was captured and after a trial he was sentenced to death by hanging. In a

national survey held in the United States 63% answered that the fears the invasion will only cause more

terror attack. On the other hand after the invasion the war in iraq started and lasted 8 long years which

after created a void in iraq in which many believe caused the rise of ISIS in iraq.

Foreign policies are created in the time of need sometimes the effects after are good and sometimes

they are bad, foreign policies aren’t always related to war they are created to deal with every

international problem the United states has, it can be a economic policy an environmental policy or a

war policy if it affects other nations or regions it is a foreign policy.
