Preparing for Informatica PowerCenter Training

Overview

This guide contains checklists for set-up requirements for each Informatica class
based on PowerCenter 8.6. This guide includes instructions on how to prepare
classroom computers. All requirements must be completed before an Informatica
Education Services class begins. If there are any questions about these
guidelines, please feel free to contact Informatica at the numbers listed below.
You can also visit our website at www.informatica.com for more information about
our products and company.

SETUP CHECKLIST

1. Training room is equipped with computers: 1 for each student and 1

for the instructor.
2. All networking issues have been addressed and completed.
3. A database server is installed. A query tool for the database is
installed on each client.
4. Students will be able to save their work either locally or to a designated
file server.
5. Informatica PowerCenter Server software is installed, Informatica
PowerCenter Repository Server software is installed, and PowerCenter
Client software is installed on each client. The versions of the client
and server software match, i.e. 8.6 Clients, 8.6 Repository Server with
8.6 Server. The CD with the PowerCenter Server, Repository Server
and Client software is available along with the installation keys for both
the operating system and the database software, in case either Server
must be reinstalled.
6. Each client has TCP/IP access to the Informatica Repository Server
and Server.
7. Sample database tablespace or databases have been created for the
Source, the Target and the Repository.
8. Test each client to show that is can connect, by creating a straight
(pass-through) Mapping in the Designer.
9. Test each client to show that is can connect natively, by creating and
executing a Workflow in the Workflow Manager and monitoring same
with the Workflow Monitor.
10. User names and passwords have been set up for each student in the
class.
11. The Host string information for the native connection is available.
12. The latest patch is applied for any database or server software being
used.

pack 2 + latest MDAC)
 Windows 2003 (32-bit only)
 2 or more CPUs preferred
 Static IP address is preferable (not DHCP)
 Informatica Server on Unix (AIX, HP, or SUN)
 Create a user ID under which the Informatica Server will run.
 Establish a home directory where the Informatica Server will be
installed.
 Make sure the Informatica user ID does not have any user limits
on memory, shared memory segments, semaphores, or open
files.
 Review the release notes located on the Informatica
PowerCenter CD.
 Refer to the installation procedures stated in the Installation and
Configuration Guide.
 Informatica Server on Windows
 Create a domain user that has permission to run Windows
services. The Informatica service will run under this user.

Database Setup
 There are instructor-provided Database Scripts to accomplish most of the
following requirements. These scripts are well documented and have
customer change information in the beginning of each script.
 Only 1 database instance is required.
 That instance must have the following user IDs: sdbu, rdbu, tdbu, tdbu01
through tdbu12 (separate target user for each student). All passwords are
identical to their corresponding user IDs.
 The instructor must have access to all of these user IDs.
 Each user should have a quota of not less than 10MB of space.
 Each user should have resource permissions (create table, create index,
create stored procedure, etc).
Note: The instructor-provided script number ‘1’
(Oracle_1_LabDBUsers12_PC7B-yyyymmdd.sql, for example) will create
these users.
 The source (sdbu) tables and indices have to be created and loaded with
source data for the students’ labs.
Note: The instructor-provided script number ‘2’
(Oracle_2_LabSrcSql_PC7B-yyyymmdd.sql, for example) will perform this
creation and loading.
 The target (tdbu, tdbu01-tdbu12) tables and their indices have to be
created
Note: The instructor-provided script number ‘3’
(Oracle_3_LabTgtSql12_PC7B-yyyymmdd.sql, for example) will create
these tables.

*Note special instructions below for specific database vendors.

Oracle
 Each of the above-mentioned user IDs represents a schema, and all
schemas may reside in the same database.
 The database must allow 100 concurrent connections and 200
processes.
 The Informatica Server and each student computer must have Net8 or
sqlnet installed along with SQLPlus and/or Toad.
 The Informatica Server and each client computer must have an
appropriate tnsnames.ora entry to connect to the database.
 The Informatica Server and each client computer should be able to
connect to the database through SQLPlus.

Informatica Software Setup

The following is a summary of the steps to install the Informatica software.

Note: Read the install manual, ‘install.pdf, ‘quickstart.pdf’ and any ‘install.rtf’ or
install read_me files found on the CD, before starting any install. Perform the
following steps exactly as outlined in the install manual.
