• Provide information about your Civic Engagement Activity (the name, place, date, hours

of time, etc). Give an overview of the event that you attended, or the volunteer

organization that you supported, including your participation / support / duties /

responsibilities / etc.

I attended a religious event and it was a talk titled “what does peace making looks like in

a violent war”. The speech presented by FRIDA BERRIGAN took place at the Salt Lake

City library on the 8th of March 2018 at 3pm. It lasted for one hour, but I went in 30mins

earlier to talk to the presenter and have a general overview on what the speech was going

to be about, but I didn’t have an opportunity to get to talk to her because others did before

me. She started her talk by first restating the topic and how there were many ways to

approach that topic and by doing that she asked question: what are we up against? and 1st

response was were are up against war and conflicts. And secondly, we are up against the

poverty that accompanies war. Through out the talk was an elaboration on the effects of

war on our nations and believes. She further said we should stand up against nuclear

armed war and be able to defend ourselves and what we stand for because we stay in a

world were peace making looks like heart break and hard work, looks impossible and yet

it’s the task of our time. She concluded that we should keep up against what we stand

against even if it feels like we are not making any progress, even if it feels like we are not

winning.

• How did the event or volunteer service connect with the topic you chose? (Make

reference to course materials).

The event was all about war and how it affects people. It talked about why people fight

and even mentioned that some people fight because of their religious rights and believes.
Taking references from the text book too, some of the reasons why there were conflicts

and revolutions was a way of rioting for an expected or unfair treatment and might extend

to other nations because of alliances and protection of private interest example was the

French revolution which was due to the poor cereal harvests, rising bread prices and

excessive spending by King Louis XVI. Also, the rich were not allowed to pay taxes and

only the poor paid taxes which lead France into paralysis, Bankruptcy, and economic

hardship of the French

She also talked about the effects of war and mentioned a few like massive loss of lives

and destruction and mentioned how 8million people have died in the Democratic republic

of Congo due to a conflict that has stretched for decades. Not only the loss of lives but

poverty equally accompanies war, and she said in the world, 815million people lives in

poverty, more than 10million live with $2 a day and 320million of those living in poverty

are children. References from the textbook, the French revelation lead to more than 9

million combatants and 7 million civilians died because of the war. Also, from the

Russian revolution, 5-10 million Russians died in (or shortly before) the Russian

Revolution of 1917(Wikipedia). This just concluded on what she said about the effects of

war, using references from my textbook and module assignments

• Did you feel that your participation made you a more responsible citizen in terms of

promoting your own freedom or the freedom of others? If so why, if not, why not?

I participated more in the talk by listening. And of course, it made me more

knowledgeable by being able to see and listen to what I only read in modules being said

in reality. Especially her life example about her family, how she was brought up, the

struggles and the relationship with war and peace making, her achievements despite
everything didn’t just make me think about war but it gave me an attitude of freedom to

express what I stand for or stand against, it made me to take a point in life and not give

up on it whether failing or winning, it made me understand more about the topic and its

impact on the life of our people, society, community and country at large.

• Did you enjoy this experience and would you do it again? Why or why not?

Yes I did, especially with the stories, some pathetic and some funny but it did serve the

purpose for the talk and my humanity objectives.

Although war is not the only treat we feel in the society, we also have inevitable issues

like climate change, dirty air, violent weather that acts as a treat to the natural security

and global health making people to live in fear. So, peacemaking shouldn’t only be

resolving a war, revolution or conflicts, but being at peace with the environment too.

Being at peace with the way we treat others ensuring that every live matter. Being at

peace with the world should be the greatest of all.

Reflection:

HUMA 1010 was a requirement for my GEN ED course, but I am so glad I took it. it

didn’t only act as a course that is studied to fulfil that class which after it is completed,

one will never use it, but HUMA 1010 is a course which you will use and see in your day

to day lives consciously or unconsciously. It is lively and easy to learn and master

because it touches every aspect of human live, behaviors and why we act in a certain way

in a particular circumstance. On e of the topics discuss here is why we fight? Why is

there war? This was a very sensitive but resourceful topic in that war is one of the major
treats in our world today. It causes one of the highest destructions and loss of properties

in our world today, including high degree of poverty and dept. I was also fortunate to

attend a talk presented by FRIDA BERRIGAN which emphasized more about making

peace in a violent world. It was indeed a resourceful class and I would definitely like to

take it again or refer others to always take Humanities because I see it as life, which is

inevitable and necessary.
