CO2 Recovery Plant to Urea production in Abu Dhabi

Brief description:

CO2 is recovered from Natural gas fired boiler and steam reformer flue gas, compressed and used
for urea production at Ruwais Fertilizer Industries plant in Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates.
Start of operation was 2009.

CO2 recovery capacity 400 metric T/D. Flue gas is cooled and SOx is removed before entering Facts:
CO2 absorber.CO2 is captured with amines with improved KM CDR Process® with KS-1™ Solvent
from MHI which has delivered the CO2 capture plant.
Main developer: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Country: United Arab Emirates

About the plant Project type: Capture
FERTIL are the owner and operator of an Ammonia and Urea complex in Ruwais. The Topsoe- Scale: Large
designed Ammonia Plant currently produces 1050 MT/day and the Stamicarbon-designed Urea
Plant’s current Capacity is 1500 MT/day. During the last 24 years, some small modifications were Status: Operative
carried out, which increased the Urea plant capacity by 20%.
Year of operation 2009
A project was started in 2007 to further increase the Urea Plant capacity by 50%, to increase the Industry: Chemical products
capasity to convert 90,000 MT Per Year of ammonia into urea. Urea Plant modifications will
enable the Urea plant Synthesis section to produce 2700 MT Per Day of Urea. Out of this, about Capture method: Post-combustion
800 MT Per Day will be sent to the Melamine plant and 1900 MT Per Day of Urea production will
be granulated and marketed. This project would cost in total around 240 Million US Dollars. Capture technology: Amine
New or retrofit: New
The Carbon Dioxide Recovery technology and license is provided by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Transport of CO2 by: none
of Japan and the unit will have a capacity of 400 MT Per Day of CO2.
Type of storage: Not decided
The most positive benefit to the Environment is the Carbon dioxide required for this process that
will be recovered from the presently vented Reformer flue gases, resulting in annual reduction in Volume: 100 000 tonnes/CO2
Green House Gases emissions of approximately 100,000 tons of CO2 and that corresponds to 20%
reduction in FERTIL CO2 emission.
